AARNET Expert Consultation on Home and Public Vegetable Gardens

Discussions are underway to ensure people in Southeast Asia can grow their way to health with vegetables in home, school, and community gardens.

The ASEAN-AVRDC Regional Network for Vegetable Research and Development (AARNET) is hosting an expert consultation from 27-30 August 2012 at the Davis Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand to discuss strategies on home, school, hospital and other public facility vegetable gardens. These gardens are applicable throughout the ASEAN region and can contribute to food and nutritional security while the region tackles the impact of climate change on agricultural and horticultural productivity.

Home gardens (sometimes termed nutrition gardens) can provide a wide variety of fruits and vegetables throughout the year, contributing significantly to a nutritious diet for family members and offering opportunities for income generation through sale of extra produce.?School, community and disaster-recovery gardens are other types of nutrition gardens.?School and community gardens are advocated where malnutrition is a concern for the vulnerable members of society (e.g. children, pregnant women and those with chronic diseases).?School and community gardens encourage the production and consumption of a wide diversity of vegetables and fruit, which are particularly important when persuading children to favor a balanced and nutritious diet as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Home gardens can also provide work opportunities for others. Home gardens offer a low-risk opportunity for the poor to develop skills in growing vegetables for home use and then for local sale.? Covenant Community Outreach offers diabetes educational classes

Covenant Community Outreach is hosting a four-week series on how to live well with diabetes. The educational classes are free for those who are uninsured or financially in need.

The class will meet Sept. 13, Sept. 20, Sept. 27 and Oct. 4. Each class is from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Lubbock Diagnostic Clinic.

Throughout the series, Julie Crane, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator for Covenant Community Outreach, will teach participants basic nutrition guidelines, the importance of carbohydrate counting, how to shop and cook with diabetes as well as how to understand food labels.

Those who attend at least three of the four classes will receive a free glucometer, Participants will receive a voucher for discounted glucometer strips.

If you're a student, you may have harbored the fantasy of learning lessons while you sleep. Who wouldn't want to stick on a pair of headphones, grab some shut-eye with a lesson about, say, Chinese history playing in his ears ? and wake up with newly acquired knowledge of the Ming Dynasty?

Sadly, it doesn't work. The history lesson either keeps you from going to sleep, or it doesn't ? in which case you don't learn it.

But researchers may have taken the first baby step to making the fantasy come true: In an unusual experiment published in Nature Neuroscience, researchers Anat Arzi, Ilana Hairston and others showed that people are capable of learning simple lessons while fast asleep.

?

The researchers sprayed volunteers with pleasant and unpleasant smells while they were fast asleep. Exactly like people who are awake, the sleeping volunteers took bigger breaths when there was a pleasant smell and a smaller breath when there was an unpleasant smell.

The researchers also paired each kind of smell with a particular sound. After repeated pairings of, say, a pleasant smell with a high-pitched beep, the researchers played the high-pitched beep without the smell: They found the volunteers took a big gulp of air. At least subconsciously, in other words, they were expecting the pleasant smell.

The researchers similarly paired an unpleasant smell ? rotting fish ? with another kind of tone. After repeated pairings, the tone alone caused the volunteers to take a smaller breath.

The phenomenon is known as conditioning, a simple form of learning made famous by Ivan Pavlov and his dog.

When the volunteers woke up, the researchers played the different tones to them. They found that the high-pitched beep caused the volunteers to take a big breath and the low-pitched beep caused the volunteers to take a small breath.

In other words, the conditioning lesson learned while the volunteers were asleep stayed with them after they awoke. Interestingly, the volunteers had no conscious recollection of having learned anything while they were sleeping.

Hairston said the research could help unlock the effects that sleep has on different brain processes. It's been known for a while that a nap can help cement things you've learned; Hairston said the sleep mechanisms that consolidate knowledge may explain why volunteers in the current experiment were able to bring what they learned during sleep into waking hours.

Practical applications of the conditioning technique are still far off, of course. But speculating about potential future uses, Hairston said: "A medical student can learn a list of body organs. You can perhaps pair different organs with smells. So you pair the thalamus with the smell of lemon, and the hippothalamus with the smell of orange blossom. When you wake up, you will have a better recollection of that list!"

If you?ve got Microsoft Excel (or just about any other popular spreadsheet program) running on your computer, you can use its FV function to forecast the future value of your Roth IRA or Roth 401(k).

The FV function calculates the future value of an investment given its interest rate, the number of payments, the payment, the present value of the investment, and, optionally, the type-of-annuity switch. (More about the type-of-annuity switch a little later.)

The function uses the following syntax:

=FV(rate,nper,pmt,pv,type)

This little pretty complicated, I grant you. But suppose you want to calculate the future value of an individual retirement account that?s already got $20,000 in it and to which you are contributing $400-a-month. Further suppose that you want to know the account balance?its future value?in 25 years and that you expect to earn 10% annual interest.

To calculate the future value of the individual retirement account in this case using the FV function, you enter the following into a worksheet cell:

=FV(10%/12,25*12,-400,-20000,0)

The function returns the value 771872.26?roughly $772,000 dollars.

A handful of things to note: To convert the 10% annual interest to a monthly interest rate, the formula divides the annual interest rate by 12. Similarly, to convert the 25-year term to a term in months, the formula multiplies 25 by 12.

Also, notice that the monthly payment and initial present values show as negative amounts because they represent cash outflows. And the function returns the future value amount as a positive value because it reflects a cash inflow you ultimately receive.

That 0 at the end of the function is the type-of-annuity switch. If you set the type-of-annuity switch to 1, Excel assumes payments occur at the beginning of the period (month in this case), following the annuity due convention. If you set the annuity switch to 0 or you omit the argument, Excel assumes payments occur at the end of the period following the ordinary annuity convention.

Updated Product Review: Nexus 7 Tablet

I really should title this one, part TWO of my original review of my new Nexus 7 Tablet (can I get a shout out to Staples for having an excellent electronics department?), as now that I've had time to play with use it. Now that I've gotten alot of use of it, I wanted to share some of the really cool things that I LOVE about it.?

First, it has really make me MISS my Android phone intently! For those who have not used Android, it is much more intuitive and user friendly of a platform than iphone. Everything has been simplified to one step, versus the 3-4 of iphone. Ever try setting a song from your computer as a ringtone on iphone? 2 programs and 5 steps, versus move from computer to phone and set in Android. ?The Nexus 7 has the new Android Jellybean and it is uber fast, responsive and beyond easy to use!?

I'm going to show you some screen shots (which you can take by merely depressing the power and down volume buttons at the same time, the device clicks and see the small screenshot to make sure you captured what you wanted to) and show you what wonders are on this phone!

Starting when you turn on the phone, you can set a password lock or a facial recognition lock. I love the facial lock, but with other family members using the tablet, I opted for a password. It only takes a couple of seconds to enter, but it keeps strangers from accessing my data, when I'm in a public place!

You can set your screensaver to how ever you want it, including your favorite picture. I've kept the recent entertainment (Google books, music and magazines) tab as a front cover, for now. After I really involved in the tablet, I will probably change them. When you slide the screen left, you get the second home screen (see above picture), with the Google Play recommendations. You can click to like the suggestion, or to remove it, and a new one will come up. Google takes this info and the next time you log on, offers more content for you.

Or you can open the Google Now cards, by simply swiping up from the bottom bar?and get your local weather, traffic, sports news, public transit and flight info (picture above)! Yup, all at one swipe! Perfect for getting what you need to know BEFORE you get dressed for the day! This is perfect for those who are always on the go for business!?



When you hit the app button, all your apps are shown (picture above). This makes it really quick to go to one of your apps, say Gallery (photos) or Game (say Mah-Jong), without having to put them on one of your home screens. They are all alphabetical, so it's quick to find them!


But say you downloaded an app, and want to open it, but you just got a call about an email you need to open? Up on the top bar on the left, you'll see small icons pop up as email comes in, you download an app, update an app, or publish say a post to Blogger (see picture above) . All you have to do to open one of them is to swipe the bar down, find the item you want and click it. Yup it's THAT simple to switch from an app to your email. Want to go back to the app? Repeat with the bar, OR you can go to the previous apps bottom 'go' button. And there are all your recent apps (picture below) ! You can scroll up and down and find the one you want. And BAMM, you can be back where you were before you went to check the email! Easy peasy!?



The Google voice search has been really amazing. It is a super time saver and I've found myself using the voice type command ALOT. Say you have a blog post idea, but are at the school waiting on your child's basketball practice to end. if you've got wifi access, all you have to do is start a post, click on the microphone on the keyboard, and start talking. Your text will appear, you can save the post, and later you can edit it at home and publish it. AND you can use the Google voice wherever you use a keyboard, including email and Facebook!?


While having no removable SD card gives the tablet some limitations. LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A highly modified vintage aircraft was pushed beyond its structural limits before it crashed into spectators at last year's National Championship Air Races in Reno, according to the findings being presented to the National Transportation Safety Board on Monday in Washington.

Loose screws on a crucial tail assembly are also blamed in the September 2011 crash that killed 74-year-old pilot Jimmy Leeward and 10 people on the ground and injured more than 70.

This year's Reno Air Races start Sept. 12.

The five-member NTSB has already issued several preliminary reports and recommendations for the Federal Aviation Administration and race organizers to improve safety.

NTSB officials said Leeward's World War II-era P-51 Mustang fighter reached 530 mph before it pitched skyward and then slammed nose-first into rows of box seats.

The five-member panel is not expected to call for restrictions on the event. The board has already issued several preliminary reports and recommendations for the Federal Aviation Administration and race organizers to improve safety. A report issued last Tuesday focused on loose screws in the tail of the World War II-era P-51 Mustang fighter that Leeward had modified to increase speed.

A spokesman for the air races said last week that event officials wouldn't comment on NTSB reports ahead of the board's findings on the cause of the crash. But he said event officers were improving preflight inspections.

Leeward, a former stunt pilot and Reno Air Races veteran who lived in Ocala, Fla., named his vintage aircraft the Galloping Ghost.

NTSB officials say he reached 530 mph during a qualifying race before the aircraft pitched skyward, rolled upside down and slammed nose-first into the tarmac amid rows of box seats. Debris and body parts were scattered for more than an acre.

Photos showed a tail stabilizer falling from the plane during the steep climb.

NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said in April the climb exerted sudden high gravitational forces that appeared to have incapacitated Leeward as blood rushed from his brain. Instruments aboard the aircraft showed the acceleration topped nine times the force of gravity ? well above a 5G threshold at which people begin to experience loss of consciousness.

In addition to loose screws, a preliminary NTSB report on Tuesday focused on the possibility that a sudden gust of wind or turbulence from a nearby plane buffeted Leeward's aircraft just before the crash. The report said a definitive conclusion wasn't possible.

Leeward's age and physical condition weren't considered significant factors in the crash.

Alcohol detected in Leeward's remains by the Washoe County medical examiner's office were attributed to aviation fuel contamination, and NTSB investigators noted that spectators' alcoholic beverages were scattered around the crash crater.

The air race championship, entering its 49th year, is the only event of its kind in the world. It draws thousands every year to Reno Stead Airport, where it features aircraft flying at speeds of over 500 mph sometimes wingtip-to-wingtip around an oval pylon track.

The crash spawned civil liability lawsuits against the pilot's family and mechanics and the host organization.

Some critics called for ending the event, but organizers pressed forward with plans for this year's races amid promises that most NTSB safety recommendations would be implemented.

The National Air-racing Group Inc. and the Reno Air Racing Association Inc. balked at requiring pilots to wear flight suits designed to mitigate high gravitational forces. They said the expensive suits might prove too bulky for cramped cockpits and too hot during competition.

Insurance premiums jumped from $300,000 last year to $2 million this year, but the Nevada state tourism commission last month approved a $600,000 sponsorship to help the Reno Air Racing Association Inc. meet a Sept. 1 deadline for its final insurance payment.

According to Williams, the company is also considering another location.? The competing location was not confirmed, but Williams said it was probably in Virginia.

?It?s an important [decision] because of who it is, what they do, the sector that they?re in, their future growth,? said Williams, who has been working on the project for almost a year.

William said the company will make a decision shortly after a public hearing set for Sept. 4.

Nine people were wounded and two people were killed outside the Empire State Building in Midtown Manhattan Friday after a disgruntled women's accessories designer named Jeffrey Johnson shot his 41 year-old former boss, Steven Ercolino. The two dead include the gunman, who was shot and killed by police near the tourist entrance of the landmark skyscraper.

Fifty-three year-old Johnson lost his job last year during a corporate downsizing at Hazan Imports, where Ercolino was a vice president. He returned to his office Friday morning to target his former supervisor.

The shooting occurred at 9:03 a.m. ET on West 33rd Street.

Johnson followed his former co-worker down 33rd Street and shot him outside of Legends Bar, according to the New York Post. It is unclear if he fired into a crowd of pedestrians outside of the Empire State Building, or if pedestrians were caught in crossfire, reported the New York Daily News.

A construction worker who witnessed the shooting followed the suspect and then alerted police who were posted nearby.?As the officers approached Johnson, he pulled his gun and fired on the officers. They returned fire and killed him, New York City Mayor Michael?Bloomberg said.

None of the other people who were shot were seriously wounded and they are all expected to recover. Some of those wounded may have been hit by police gunfire, Bloomberg said.

After the shooting, police immediately cordoned off a one-block perimeter around the Empire State Building. Around 10 a.m., a lone tourist bus headed down Fifth Avenue, and a guide could be heard over the bus's microphone explaining that they were nearing the landmark. As police waved the bus to detour down 36th Street, the guide was openly mystified. "I don't know what's going on, folks," he said, as the bus turned. The bus's passengers looked up at the sky at a news helicopter floated overhead. Some stood, clutching their cameras.

Along 35th street, hundreds of people photographed the scene with iPhones and iPads. Officers could be seen standing in the middle of 34th Street around a scene surrounded by police tape. Television producers roamed the crowd looking for witnesses. "Was anybody here when this happened? Was anybody here when this happened?" one NBC producer yelled.

Word of the shooting spread rapidly on social media networks.

"On 5th avenue surrounded by helicopters and police," @CeciliaHalling wrote on Twitter. "I'm very glad I wasn't 20 blocks further down half an hour ago."

S Korea court says Samsung, Apple infringed patents

A Seoul court ruled on Friday that Apple and Samsung had infringed on each other's patents on mobile devices, and ordered a partial ban on sales of their products in South Korea.

The court ruling comes as the two firms are locked in a bitter patent battle that could determine their fight for supremacy in the global smartphone market.

The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Apple breached two of Samsung's technology patents, and ordered it to pay 40 million won ($35,242) in damages, court officials said.

It also ordered Samsung to pay 25 million won for violating one of Apple's patents, Yonhap news agency said.

The court said the firms must halt sales of infringing products in South Korea, according to Dow Jones Newswires which said the banned products did not include the latest models of Samsung and Apple devices.

Samsung filed a lawsuit against Apple in Seoul in April last year regarding infringement of patents related to telecommunications standards.

Apple responded in June by filing a counter suit claiming Samsung copied the design and user interface of its iPhone and iPad.

The split ruling is not expected to make any impact on the broader dispute which involves legal action in several nations including the United States and Australia.

The South Korean decision comes ahead of a high-stakes US jury verdict that is expected to signal the future course of the rival firms' tussle for smartphone supremacy.

In the US court, Apple is seeking more than $2.5 billion after accusing the Korean firm of infringing designs and other patents. Samsung says Apple infringed its patents for wireless communication.

It is one of several legal cases around the world involving the two electronics giants in the hottest part of the tech sector -- tablet computers and smartphones.

While the results so far have been mixed in courts in Europe and Australia, Samsung has a lot at stake in the US case, which could result in large damages or injunctions against its products in the American market.

A recent survey by research firm IDC showed Samsung extended its lead over Apple in the smartphone market in the second quarter despite slowing demand for mobile phones.

Samsung shipped 50.2 million smartphones globally in the April-June period, while Apple sold 26 million iPhones. IDC said Samsung held 32.6 percent of the market to 16.9 percent for Apple.

Samsung has steadfastly denied abusing Apple patents and countered in court that Apple has been taking advantage of some of the South Korean company's patented technology for wireless connections.
