Rihanna: Home Sweet Home (omg!)

Rihanna: Home Sweet Home

Looks like it might have been a white sand Christmas for Rihanna. The singer tweeted a picture of herself in Barbados on Tuesday.

In the pic, RiRi, dressed in a bikini, blows a kiss while showing off the ink across her rib cage. The Arabic tattoo reportedly translates to "Freedom in God."

Enjoy!

Fearing split, pastors urge GOP candidates to quit (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Two politically active pastors in Iowa's robust evangelical conservative movement said Wednesday that an effort has been under way to persuade either Rick Santorum or Michele Bachmann to consider quitting the Republican presidential race and endorsing the other to avoid splintering this influential voting bloc's influence in the state's caucuses.

"Otherwise, like-minded people will be divided and water down their impact," said Rev. Cary Gordon, a Sioux City minister. He said he asked Santorum several weeks ago to consider exiting the race but has since endorsed the former Pennsylvania senator, who is rising in polls.

Rev. Albert Calloway, a retired pastor from Indianola, said he asked Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, several days ago to consider quitting the race.

A group of voters that united behind former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's winning caucus campaign in 2008 fear that this year's caucuses could be won by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney or Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas. Neither track as closely to the religious right as Santorum, Bachmann or Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Santorum, long dismissed and short on campaign money, has diligently campaigned in Iowa for more than two years. A CNN poll of Iowa caucus-goers released Wednesday showed Santorum leaping into third place in Iowa, at 16 percentage points, behind Romney and Paul.

In recent weeks, Santorum has picked up the endorsements of key social conservatives, including former gubernatorial candidate Bob Vander Plaats, who led the successful effort last year to oust three Iowa Supreme Court judges who were part of the court's unanimous 2009 decision to allow gay marriage.

Bachmann too has rallied Iowa's influential conservative clergy. Many, like Jeff Mullen, pastor of one of the Des Moines area's mega churches, helped lead Bachmann's winning campaign for Iowa's Republican presidential straw poll last August. But since then, Bachmann has faded in polls, although Wednesday she planned to conclude an ambitious effort to campaign in all of Iowa's 99 counties.

The CNN poll showed Bachmann with support of 9 percent of likely GOP caucus-goers, up slightly from the last poll. Perry had 11 percent, also up slightly.

Bachmann told reporters on her campaign bus between stops in Iowa on Wednesday she wasn't quitting and planned to announce additional clergy who were supporting her candidacy.

"The pastors who have endorsed my campaign want to see me as the next president of the United States," Bachmann said.

Gordon, who helped lead the campaign against the judges, said the fear of a divided social conservative vote is widespread among the state's evangelical clergy. However, few have actually reached out to candidates, he said.

Brad Cranston, a pastor from Burlington, said he too is worried that social conservatives will split their vote and lose influence over the eventual GOP nominee, but he has not yet tried to contact any candidates.

"It's more and more obvious it needs to happen for either Bachmann or Santorum to move forward," said Cranston, who has endorsed Bachmann.

Wednesday 28th December, 2011 (IANS)

Eli Guttman has been named the new coach of the Israel football team, the country's football association announced.

Guttman, the former Hapoel Tel Aviv manager, replaced Frenchman Luis Fernandez for the job.

Fernandez's contract was not renewed after he failed to lead Israel to the Euro 2012 finals.

'I am happy to announce the new coach of the Israel team,' chairman Avi Luzon was quoted as saying by Xinhua. 'The choice of Eli Guttman is not by chance, Eli is a professional with tactical discipline.'

'Today I am fulfilling half a dream,' the 53-year-old Guttman said. 'The second half will be fulfilled for all of us when we qualify for the World Cup.'

Guttman's first match in charge will be a friendly against Euro 2012 hosts Ukraine Feb 29.

Once an afterthought, Romney eyes Iowa with hope

(AP) ? Mitt Romney, watching as Republicans flail for a not-Romney alternative, is looking with optimism at Iowa, the state that rejected him four years earlier but now appears at least open to the possibility that he could be the GOP presidential nominee.

With Iowa barreling toward its lead-off caucuses Tuesday, Romney is suddenly making a public play to win the contest he largely kept at arm's length since his stinging second-place finish in 2008. Romney planned to begin his Friday in West Des Moines with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a larger-than-life figure whom conservatives courted to join the race before he endorsed Romney's presidential quest.

Romney's declared rivals, however, were working in overdrive to emerge as his chief rival. None went directly after the former Massachusetts governor though. Instead, they kept their focus on each other as all hoped a strong showing here could yield momentum heading into the next contests in New Hampshire and South Carolina.

"Don't settle for what's not good enough to save the country," the newly ascendant Rick Santorum implored Iowans on Thursday at city hall in Coralville. He urged voters to put conservative principles above everything else and suggested that his rivals, and specifically Ron Paul, lacked them.

For the first time, Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator who lost a bruising 2006 re-election bid, became a target.

"When he talks about fiscal conservatism, every now and then it leaves me scratching my head because he was a prolific earmarker," Texas Gov. Rick Perry said of Santorum, referring to special spending projects members of Congress seek. "He loaded up his bill with Pennsylvania pork.'"

Rep. Michele Bachmann also criticized Santorum on the spending set-asides in a conference call late Thursday with supporters.

"He has a real problem with earmarks," she said.

Santorum defended the practice as part of lawmakers' constitutional role as appropriators, telling CNBC that he owed it to Pennsylvanians to bring money to the state. He said earmarking became abused and that he would support a ban on them if he were president.

Both of Santorum's critics planned to continue to hammer that point ? Perry in central Iowa and Bachmann in the western part of the state. Santorum, meanwhile, planned to campaign in north-central Iowa, including a watch party for Iowa and Oklahoma's faceoff in the Insight Bowl football game.

The maneuvering underscored the fluid ? if not convoluted ? state of the GOP presidential race as Tuesday's caucuses loom while cultural conservatives and evangelical Republicans, who make up the base of the electorate here, continue to be divided. That lack of unity could pave the way for someone who is seen as less consistently conservative.

Five days out, public and private polling show Romney and Paul in strong contention to win the caucuses, with coalitions of support cobbled together from across the Republican political spectrum and their get-out-the-vote operations ? beefed up from their failed 2008 bids ? at the ready. They're the only two with the money and the organizations necessary to ensure big turnouts on Tuesday.

The three others ? Santorum, Perry and Gingrich ? will have to rely largely on momentum to carry supporters to precinct caucuses. Each was working to convince fickle conservatives that he alone would satisfy those who yearn for a nominee who would adhere strictly to GOP orthodoxy.

Looking to capitalize on his burst of support in new polls, Santorum made a play for tea party backers lining up behind Paul by arguing that the Texas congressman is longer on promising sweeping change than enacting it:

"The guy has passed one bill in 20 years," Santorum said. "What makes you think he can do any of these things?"

Oil price falls as Saudis trump Iran threat

(AP) ? Oil prices fell on Wednesday, after Saudi Arabia said it will offset any loss of oil from a threatened Iranian blockade of a crucial tanker route in the Middle East.

The U.S. Navy warned that any disruption of traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz "will not be tolerated."

In New York, benchmark crude fell $1.98, or about 2 percent, to finish at $99.36 a barrel.

Brent crude fell $1.71 to end at $107.56 a barrel in London.

On Tuesday Iran's vice president said that his country was ready to close the Strait of Hormuz ? a vital waterway through which a third of the world's tanker traffic flows ? if western nations embargo the country's oil because of Iran's ongoing nuclear program. The head of the country's navy added on Wednesday that his fleet can block the strait if need be. His comments came as Iran held a 10-day drill in international waters near the strategic route, which is 21 miles wide at its narrowest point.

A Saudi oil ministry official told The Associated Press that Saudi Arabia and other Gulf producers are ready to provide more oil if Iran tries to block the strait. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the issue. He didn't specify other routes that could be used to transport oil, although they would likely be longer and more expensive for getting crude to the region's customers.

"Anyone who threatens to disrupt freedom of navigation in an international strait is clearly outside the community of nations; any disruption will not be tolerated," said Lt. Rebecca Rebarich, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, which is responsible for naval operations in the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.

Some analysts think the Iranian threats are more rhetoric than reality. "We doubt political posturing will turn into action," energy consultant and trader Stephen Schork said in a report.

"Shutting down the strait ... is the last bullet that Iran has and therefore we have to express some doubt that they would do this and at the same time lose their support from China and Russia," said analyst Olivier Jakob of Petromatrix in Switzerland.

Iran is the fourth largest oil exporter in the world, according to the Energy Department. Most of its crude goes to Asia, with China its biggest customer. Oil provides half of Iran's revenue. Last year that amounted to about $73 billion.

Oil prices were also undercut on Wednesday by persistent worries about Europe and future demand for oil as the region's economy weakens. The European Central Bank said the continent's banks parked a record $590.72 billion overnight with the ECB, reflecting distrust in the European banking system.

In other energy futures trading, heating oil fell 2 cents to finish at $2.89 a gallon, gasoline fell 4 cents to end at $2.65 a gallon and natural gas fell 3 cents to finish the day at $3.08 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Wall Street tumbles sharply on European jitters

By Associated Press

NEW YORK ? Stocks fell Wednesday after Europe's central bank reported that its overnight deposits hit another record, the latest indication of worry among European lenders.

The European Central Bank said the continent's banks parked a record $590.72 billion with it overnight. That means those banks are less willing to take the risk of making short-term loans to each other, opting instead to earn low interest rates from the ECB. The disclosure also hurt the euro, which fell over 1 percent against the dollar, to $1.29.

The worrying news from the ECB overshadowed two successful auctions of Italian government debt. Italy was able to pay much lower borrowing rates than it did in auctions last month. The strong demand from investors raised hopes that Italy would be able to avoid sinking into a financial crisis, as smaller countries like Greece and Portugal have.

John Merrill, chief investment officer at Tanglewood Wealth Management, said markets would remain vulnerable to flare-ups in Europe's long-running financial crisis until leaders there come up with more convincing solutions for paying down their enormous debt loads and keeping the 17-nation currency union intact.

"We live in a Band-Aid world," Merrill said. "Nobody really is addressing underlying issues."

European leaders agreed at a summit Dec. 9 to forge closer fiscal ties over the long term, but investors are still worried that Greece might default on its debt or be forced to leave the euro bloc. A Greek exit from the currency union would likely cause huge disruptions for the country's economy and losses for European banks that hold Greek government debt. Investors fear that could cascade into another global financial panic, as happened in 2008 following the collapse of the U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers.

According to preliminary calculations, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 137.82 points, or?1.12 percent, to 12,153.53. Materials and energy companies were leading the declines. Alcoa Inc. fell 2.7 percent and Caterpillar Inc. fell 1.8 percent. AT&T Inc. edged up 0.1 percent, was the only one of the 30 stocks in the Dow average that rose.

Trading was very quiet in a holiday-shortened week. Markets were closed Monday in observance of Christmas. The Dow closed 2 points lower Tuesday.

The S&P 500 fell?15.65 points, or?1.24 percent, to 1,249.78. It was the first decline for the S&P index after five days of gains, and turned the index negative for the year. The Nasdaq composite declined?24.84 points, or 1.33?percent, to 2,590.36.

The Bank of Italy raised $11.8 billion in two bond auctions, reflecting investor approval of the country's recently passed austerity measures. The yield on Italy's six-month bill offering was half the interest rate the country paid in a similar auction last month. The yield on the country's 10-year bond remained dangerously high, however, at 6.93 percent. It had risen to 7 percent Tuesday, a level that is considered unsustainable.

Italy is the euro zone's third-largest economy and is considered too big to save under the euro zone's current bailout funds. Investors have grown fearful over the past few months that Italy will find it difficult to pay off its massive debts, which stand at around $2.5 trillion.

The worries were reflected in U.S. bank stocks. Bank of America Corp. fell 3 percent, while Regions Financial Corp. fell 3 percent.

In other corporate news:

  • Sandridge Energy Inc. stock is down over 3 percent on news that it is selling drilling rights in two states to a Spanish energy company, Repsol YPF.
  • Cavium Inc. fell 2 percent, a day after the chipmaker said its fourth-quarter results will fall below its previous forecast.

(AP) ? While Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks were on the court celebrating the championship they won over LeBron James and Dwyane Wade last season, the Miami Heat were gathered in another part of the building.

It wasn't because they dreaded watching the ceremony, they insisted.

They were simply getting ready to show everyone why they are favored to win it all this season.

James and Wade led a series of scoring waves that put Miami ahead by 35 points midway through the third quarter, the lead peaking when James soared to the rim and tipped an alley-oop pass to Wade so he could have the dunk instead. The game was essentially over then, although the Mavs reserves fueled a late rally that made the final score look close, 105-94.

"We tried to play aggressive," James said. "We're a focused team. We had a great training camp. We came in with the same mindset we had at practice, use our speed and play with mental focus."

James finished with 37 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Wade had 26 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Miami scored at least 30 points in each of the first three quarters.

"Celebration or not, we had a game plan and implemented it," Wade said. "We came out and played a good game."

Maybe the pregame festivities left the Mavs emotionally drained because they were down by 15 after one quarter and 21 at halftime. They then gave up 14 straight points early in the third quarter.

The blowout had less to do with an emotional hangover and more to do with exposing the slow process of breaking in a new rotation. Dallas lost center Tyson Chandler and backup point guard J.J. Barea and added guard Vince Carter, do-it-all Lamar Odom and backup guard Delonte West.

"We're going to have to forge an identity with this team; it's a different team," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "That's work, and it's going to take honesty, and it's not going to be easy."

Carter took Dallas' first two shots, an 18-footer and a layup. Both missed. West started the second half in his place and finished with 10 points. Carter had five points, two rebounds and three assists in 21 minutes.

Odom ? the NBA's reigning Sixth Man of the Year, who was acquired from the Lakers a few weeks ago for merely a trade exception ? entered to a standing ovation, and got fans roaring again when he made a 3-pointer that tied the game at 11. He missed his next five shots before getting ejected midway through the third quarter, but still left to loud cheers. He had four points and four rebounds in 13 minutes.

"We've got to get better and it will take a little time to get better," Odom said.

Jason Terry sparked a Dallas rally, that started after Odom was tossed, and wound up leading Dallas with 23 points. Nowitzki scored 21 in three quarters. Shawn Marion scored 12 and broke the pinky finger on his left hand.

NBA Commissioner David Stern attended the game and took part in the banner raising ceremony. Fans greeted him with boos, perhaps showing disgust over the lockout that delayed the start of the season from Nov. 1 and shrunk the season by 16 games.

Fans had plenty more to cheer, such as Terry proclaiming, "Thirty-one years you waited ? 31 years! ? to call your team a champion, ladies and gentlemen. A champion!"

Nowitzki, Terry, Jason Kidd and many more players, coaches and staff each got a strand to yank as part of the unveiling of the banner at court level. Nowitzki and Kidd seemed awed as they watched it rise to the rafters. They couldn't take their eyes off it ? or didn't want to.

Championship tie-ins were everywhere, from the Mavs' warmup jackets proclaiming them the 2011 NBA Champions to jerseys featuring a patch of the championship trophy, with the words on the front and back of their jerseys all outlined in gold. Terry even wore gold high-tops.

But Dallas was more style than substance, especially compared to a Miami team that returns the core of its rotation.

The Heat scored 18 points in the paint in the first quarter, while the Mavs scored a total of 17 that period ? none in the paint. Both Miami's 18 and Dallas' 0 are an indication of how badly the Mavs will miss Chandler.

Miami went on a 12-0 run late in the first quarter, a 15-1 spurt in the second quarter, then the 14-0 binge in the third period. At the end of that final surge, James made a spin move to free himself for a 17-foot jumper off the glass, then followed with his alley-oop tip to Wade.

"It was showtime," said Heat point guard Mario Chalmers, who had the initial pass to James. "That comes from playing a whole season together last year and working out during the offseason with each other."

NOTES: Miami had lost 14 straight regular-season games to the Mavericks and nine straight in Dallas, dating to March 2004. ... The Mavericks were sold out for the 400th straight regular-season game, extending their NBA record. ... The championship-defense-opening rout might seem familiar for Heat fans. After Miami beat Dallas in the 2006 finals, the Heat were clobbered 108-66 at home by the Bulls in the 2006-07 opener. ... The Mavericks had fun connecting Christmas and their championship, such as a parody of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" that kept coming back to the line "and a Larry O'Brien tro-phy." ...The Heat showed their holiday spirit by wearing green laces with their red shoes.

(AP) ? For the second straight day, police did not plan to search for a missing 9-year-old Indiana girl who has physical and emotional problems and went missing from a family friend's home on Friday.

More than 100 emergency workers conducted an extensive search Saturday for Aliahna Lemmon around the mobile home park on Fort Wayne's north side where she was last seen. No active search was done Sunday for the girl.

Allen County sheriff's department Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel said a new search wasn't planned for Monday unless new leads arise through tips from the public or interviews.

Police haven't said why they called off the search after one day and aren't searching again. They also haven't said what they think happened to Aliahna.

Aliahna and her sisters were staying at a family friend's nearby home because their mother had been sick with the flu and Aliahna's stepfather works at night and sleeps during the day, The Journal Gazette reported Monday.

Mike Plumadore, 39, told the newspaper Sunday that he left the three girls in his mobile home about 6 a.m. Friday and went to a gas station about a mile away to buy a cigar. Authorities have said the store's surveillance video shows him there about that time.

"I had deadbolted the door," he said. "When I got back, all the girls was here."

He said he smoked his cigar and went back to sleep, then woke up about 10 a.m. when Aliahna's mother called. After that call, he realized the door to the home was unlocked and that Aliahna was gone. He said Aliahna's sisters, both 6 years old, told him that Aliahna had left with her mom.

Plumadore said it wasn't until he talked with Aliahna's mom about 8:30 p.m. that they realized she was missing and police were notified.

Aliahna's mother, Tarah Souders, 28, said miscommunication between the two of them caused the delay in determining that Aliahna had vanished.

"She's never wandered off," Souders said. "She's never done anything like this before."

But Aliahna does have a history of sleepwalking, even unlocking doors and going outside while sleeping, said her grandmother, Amber Story.

"I just hope that she's not suffering or in pain," Story said.

Souders said her daughter also has vision and hearing problems and suffers from attention deficit disorder and emotional problems.

China arrests suspect in murder that inspired film (AP)

BEIJING ? Chinese police have arrested a suspect in the murder of an official 17 years ago that became the basis of a popular film about Tibetan antelope poaching

Ranger and government official Sonam Dargye was killed during a gunfight with poachers as he tried to protect endangered antelopes in western China in 1994.

Dargye's murder on the sparsely populated Qinghai-Tibet plateau inspired the 2004 film "Mountain Patrol" by Chinese director Lu Chuan. It also drew attention to the Tibetan antelope, which became endangered after being hunted for its wool that is used to make luxury shahtoosh shawls.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday that a suspect in the group that allegedly shot Dargye was arrested in Qinghai province Sunday after six others surrendered.

George Bailey vs. Steve Jobs (VIDEO)

Apple cofounder Steve Jobs urged, 'Don?t waste your time living someone else?s life.' But in 'It's a Wonderful Life,' protagonist George Bailey gave up his dreams for his own life and learned that 'no one is a failure who has friends.' How do we square these messages?

Soon we will close out another year by celebrating the holidays and taking stock of our lives, reflecting on what went well, and what didn?t. And, as always, George Bailey will help us through it.

We all know George Bailey, the everyman protagonist of the classic holiday movie ?It?s a Wonderful Life.? And we know George?s story ? how his boyhood dreams of experiencing the world beyond his hometown of Bedford Falls are crushed by the realities of a father?s untimely death, a shaky economy, and his own inability to put his craving for independence and adventure ahead of his responsibilities. We all know the scene where George, feeling a failure, considers taking his own life by jumping into an icy river, and how his guardian angel, Clarence, helps him evaluate his life in a way that forgives the derailing of ambitious dreams in favor of an ordinary, decent life.

I wonder whether we will see George any differently this year,?so soon after the death of Steve Jobs.

Much has been remembered about Mr. Jobs recently, and, as the end of year approaches, nothing seems more apt than Jobs?s philosophy of life choices. Most of us have heard excerpts of the commencement address Jobs gave at Stanford University half a dozen years ago, after he had already faced his mortality through a first bout of illness:

?[Y]ou can?t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.... Your time is limited, so don?t waste it living someone else?s life.... Don?t let the noise of others? opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.?

His language is powerful and inspiring ? and we know it worked for him. When Jobs trusted in his heart and intuition, it led to great success ? money, fame, prestige, respect, satisfaction ? the kind of stuff ordinary people dream about.

So how do we square Jobs?s determined ?don?t waste your time living someone else?s life? advice with Bailey?s ?no one is a failure who has friends? message? In one sense, George did let the noise of other people's opinions drown out his inner voice. George did not do what he wanted ? he did not leave Bedford Falls wiping the dust off his feet as he left. But we already know what would have happened if he had. George?s nemesis, Mr. Potter, would have turned Bedford Falls into a hedonistic Gomorrah where the mean of spirit (think Nick the bartender) reaped profits and the majority stayed down and out.

Disaster-struck Japan set for record-high spending (AP)

TOKYO ? Disaster-struck Japan is headed to record-high budget spending of 96 trillion yen ($1.2 trillion) as the nation tackles the costs of recovery from the March earthquake and tsunami.

The Cabinet approved the draft budget for the fiscal year starting April 2012 on Saturday, covering massive costs for disaster reconstruction in northeastern Japan as well as decontamination efforts for radiation leaked from a tsunami-damaged nuclear power plant.

The government will rely on new debt for 49 percent of its annual revenue, the highest level ever, according to Kyodo News service.

Japan's ballooning public debt is expected to renew the push from the government to raise the consumption ? or sales ? tax, now at 5 percent, a move certain to meet resistance from a public disenchanted with what some have criticized as wasteful spending favoring bureaucrats.

"Unless we do a fundamental review of the tax system, we are reaching our limit in trying to maintain our welfare services," Finance Minister Jun Azumi told reporters.

Japan is reducing its spending for developing atomic energy. But it will need to spend far more than the amount saved to safely close down Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, which went into meltdown following the disasters.

Damage from the March 11 disasters is estimated at between 16 trillion yen ($198 billion) and 25 trillion yen ($309 billion), according to Japan's Cabinet Office, making it the world's most expensive natural disaster ever.

That number doesn't include the cost of the nuclear crisis, including evacuation, decontamination and damage expenses.

Japan's rapidly aging society has also pushed up spending as the government burden rises for the national pension plan.

Linaro member boards get accelerated builds of Android Ice Cream Sandwich

Accelerated builds of Android Ice Cream Sandwich now available on Linaro member boards

Cambridge, UK - 21 December 2011 - Linaro, a not-for-profit engineering organization consolidating and optimizing open source software for the ARM architecture, today announced the availability of builds of Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) supporting accelerated graphics on two of its member's low cost development boards: the Samsung Origen and ST-Ericsson Snowball boards.

Just over a month ago, within a day of Google's release of the 4.0.1 ICS version of Android, Linaro showed videos of it running on the Texas Instruments (TI) PandaBoard and shortly after that on the Freescale i.MX53 Quick Start board, the Samsung Origen board and ST-Ericsson's Snowball board. The accelerated graphics support that has been made available today makes use of the ARM Mali-400 graphics processor used by two of these boards. This graphics processor is integrated with a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor: on the Samsung Origen board in Samsung's Exynos 4210 SoC, and on the ST-Ericsson Snowball board in ST-Ericsson's NovaTM A9500 SoC. Users of these boards can view videos of these latest builds on Linaro's YouTube channel and download the accelerated builds for the Snowball and Origen boards on Linaro's releases.linaro.org website.

Developers are able to create optimized Linux-based devices with the support of Linaro. For example, Linaro uses the latest GCC 4.6 toolchain to build Android, enabling Linaro's Android to outperform standard Android builds in benchmarks and real-world tasks. The 4.6 toolchain allows developers to optimize for the latest SoCs like ST-Ericsson's Nova A9500 processor and Samsung's Exynos4210, which leads to an improved user experience. Furthermore, the toolchain gives early access to the performance improvements Linaro has been developing in the next release of GCC, as well as the many correctness fixes identified and provided through working with the Linaro community. As an example, the Linaro 4.6 toolchain includes features to allow software to manually or automatically parallelize compute tasks across the multiple cores in the chips.

Linaro operates openly, and these accelerated builds are the latest downloads enabling advanced product development on hardware from its member companies. Linaro's goal is to provide consolidated and optimized open source software building blocks that provide companies with a foundation on which they can rapidly build and deliver innovative, differentiated solutions.

Join us for Linaro Connect Q1.12

Linaro Connect is held every three to four months to bring the Linux on ARM community together to work on the latest system-on-chip (SoC) developments, plan new engineering efforts and hold engineering hacking sessions. These events give the Linux community an opportunity to be a part of the Linaro team and help to define the ARM tools, Linux kernels and builds of key Linux distributions including Android and Ubuntu on member SoCs. Join us for our next event February 6-10th in San Francisco, California. Learn more at connect.linaro.org

About Linaro

Linaro is a not-for-profit engineering organization working on consolidating and optimizing open source software for the ARM architecture, including the GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) toolchain, the Linux kernel, ARM power management, graphics and multimedia interfaces. Linaro's key value is in working on generic ARM technology that is common to all ARM SoC vendors. In this way engineering costs are shared, rather than each vendor having to implement core software technology themselves, which has historically resulted in fragmentation and overhead in maintaining code that cannot be upstreamed to the mainline Linux kernel and other open source projects. Linaro's output is used by its members, and by distributions including Android, Ubuntu and OEM/ODM customized versions of Linux. Linaro's goals are to deliver value to its members by enabling their engineering teams to focus on differentiation and product delivery, and to reduce time to market for OEM/ODMs delivering open source based products using ARM technology. Ore. man stunned family feared he was Gacy victim (AP)

BEAVERTON, Ore. ? After Ted Szal ran out on his family near Chicago 35 years ago, he had no idea his relatives feared for decades he had been killed by notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy.

Szal's family learned this week that their missing relative is alive in a suburb of Portland, Ore.

"My family thought I was dead. That hurt when I heard that," the 59-year-old carpenter told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "There's a difference between being murdered and running away, and I basically just ran away."

Szal was 24 when he parked his car at Chicago's O'Hare airport in 1977, threw his keys down a sewer grate and got on a plane to Colorado Springs. He abandoned his relatives after the turmoil of a divorce and a bitter family feud.

He intended to never look back, Szal said. But it wasn't that easy. Holidays and birthdays were tough, and his wife pleaded with him to reconnect, he said, but he was too stubborn to make the phone call.

"I threw the keys away and I threw my life away 35 years ago," Szal said.

"I missed them a lot, course I did. But I'm also stubborn. I made up my mind," he said.

Newly liberated from his life in Chicago, Szal "wandered around the mountains for a while" in 1977. Low on money and unable to find work, he moved to California before migrating to Oregon to help build a new shopping mall in Springfield. When the crew moved on to a new project in Indiana, Szal stayed behind with the mountains and rivers he'd come to love.

Szal hasn't spoken with his relatives yet. It's overwhelming, he said, and he needs to digest the news. He told police they could give his address to relatives, and they'll start with letters.

Szal's older sister contacted the Cook County sheriff's office in October when authorities asked for tips that might help them identify eight unknown Gacy victims whose bodies were recently exhumed. The sheriff's office issued a public plea for families of young men who disappeared in the 1970s to submit DNA samples for comparison with the victims' remains.

Investigators exhumed the remains earlier this year, hoping that the passage of time and advancement of technology would work in their favor. They established a hotline and a website for people to file reports.

Gacy is remembered as one of history's most bizarre killers, largely because of his work as an amateur clown. He was convicted of murdering 33 young men, sometimes luring them to his Chicago-area home for sex by impersonating a police officer or promising them construction work.

The building contractor stabbed one and strangled the others between 1972 and 1978. Most were buried in a crawl space under his home. Four others were dumped in a river.

Gacy was executed in 1994.

Investigators said Gacy lived near O'Hare. As a young white man who worked in construction and disappeared from the airport in 1977, Szal fit Gacy's victim profile, investigators said.

Authorities used a computer database to find Szal living in Beaverton, Ore., and a local police officer visited his apartment Monday to confirm his identity. Cook County officials say his relatives were told Tuesday that he is alive.

"Being able to tell an 88-year-old father that his son, whose picture he has been carrying around for 34 years in his breast pocket, has been found alive is something special," Sheriff Thomas Dart said in a statement.

Reached by phone, Szal's father said he didn't feel well and declined to comment. Szal said he was pleased to learn his parents are still alive.

Even before his name was publicly linked to the serial killer, Szal had taken an interest in the Gacy case and had even read some books about it. He can understand why some would suspect connections to his disappearance, he said, but it never occurred him.

A carpenter, Szal is now working on starting a building maintenance business. Finally reconnecting ? facing his emotions and his feelings of betrayal ? feels like a "horrible weight" has been lifted, he said.

"We've had some tough Christmases just because it's hard not to be depressed," Szal said. "So this year there's a little light shining on us now."

Snooki sued for $7 million over merchandising deal

Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi may soon end up in court -- but not for the usual reasons.

PHOTOS: Snooki's wild summer in Seaside Heights, NJ

The 24-year-old "Jersey Shore" star has been hit with a $7 million counterclaim in her legal battle with licensing company SRG Ventures.

VIDEO: Snooki on her body: "What the hell happened?"

According to The New York Post, Polizzi initially partnered with the company to launch an array of merchandise including school supplies, watches, shoes and lingerie. The pint-sized party girl filed suit in October to end her contract with SRG Ventures, claiming the company didn't fulfill its obligation to secure enough money and develop sufficient branding partnerships.VIDEO: Snooki installs a stripper pole in her house

SRG Ventures' counterclaim alleges Polizzi sabotaged their agreement by negotiating with brands behind the company's back -- a claim Polizzi's lawyer strongly denies. "Ms. Polizzi disputes SRG's version of the facts and looks forward to her day in court," SRG's lawyer Robert J. Hantman says.

(AP) ? Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney charged Friday into the final weeks before the leadoff Iowa caucuses, unshaken by Newt Gingrich, the race's leader, and trying to stem the former House speaker's rise in key states.

Romney campaigned in western Iowa, where he had delivered a steady debate performance the night before, stopping short of the attacks on Gingrich that had marked the former Massachusetts governor's campaign for the past week.

While Gingrich took a day off the campaign trail, Romney claimed a coveted endorsement from South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, a tea party darling. The state holds the first-in-the-South primary in late January and Gingrich, a former congressman from neighboring Georgia, has organized and campaign aggressively there.

Romney also began airing new ads in New Hampshire and South Carolina on a day that amounted to a show of force for him. He is targeting Gingrich in the top three states with less than three weeks to go before voting begins in Iowa on Jan. 3.

"Neither South Carolina nor the nation can afford four more years of President Obama, and Mitt Romney is the right person to take him on and get America back on track," Haley, a rising GOP star, said in a statement after announcing her endorsement on Fox News Channel.

She later told The Associated Press that Romney "has led in making decisions."

The two were to appear together in South Carolina on Friday and Saturday.

In the AP interview, Haley said the large GOP field has strengths and weaknesses.

"We don't have a perfect candidate," she said. She said she liked Romney's ability as governor to work with Democrat, business background and outlook on health care.

Haley's nod is somewhat rare because sitting governors of important primary states often remain neutral. Iowa's GOP Gov. Terry Branstad has said he does not plan to endorse a candidate. Branstad said Thursday that he wasn't sure Gingrich had the discipline to be president, but he also has criticized Romney for not campaigning all-out for the caucuses.

Romney has focused heavily on winning New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary on Jan. 10. But he has been spending more time in Iowa as Gingrich has risen in the polls, and has aired TV ads promoting his candidacy and distributed mailers attacking Gingrich.

"I need your help at the caucus," Romney told about 80 Republican activists and employees at a Sioux City steel company on Friday.

Romney's new ad in New Hampshire shows the former business executive talking to voters about their economic concerns. In the ad running in South Carolina, Romney touts his leadership and describes himself as "a man of steadiness and constancy."

Unlike his all-out but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to win the 2008 caucuses, Romney hopes a better-than-expected showing among Iowa conservatives could lift him going into New Hampshire.

But Romney is also looking increasingly beyond Iowa, advisers said.

Sensing a flattening in Gingrich's support, Romney stayed positive Friday and looked to step up his effort in South Carolina in hopes of disrupting Gingrich's plan.

That strategy poses risks for Romney, whose Mormon faith and changed positions on social issues gives some South Carolina GOP activists pause ? as in socially-conservative Iowa.

Romney's attacks on Gingrich's judgment and temperament over the past week, and the aggressive criticisms by GOP rivals Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul, have cut into Gingrich's lead in Iowa in a way that could weaken him in next-up New Hampshire.

Taken together, it suggests slowing Gingrich's rise in Iowa could prevent him from going into South Carolina in a position of strength.

In Thursday's debate, Romney pivoted from the attacks he's been leveling against Gingrich and left it to others to pile on.

The fast-paced debate underscored the state of the race, with Gingrich leading in the polls nationally and in Iowa and his pursuers working on multiple fronts to overtake him.

The candidates ? except for Gingrich ? were making final pitches to voters on Friday before people begin focusing on the holidays.

Rep. Bachmann and Texas Gov. Rick Perry were taking their argument that Gingrich isn't conservative enough to lead the party to Iowa voters on separate bus tours.

"I am the only consistent, constitutional conservative," Bachmann said, beginning a bus tour through Iowa's 99 counties. "I'm not a convenient conservative."

She predicted the retail campaigning she's doing on the bus tour would help her do well in Iowa and that would "be a cannon shot into South Carolina."

Although Gingrich was off the trail, his campaign drew unwanted attention after two New Hampshire Republicans alleged in complaints filed with state authorities that they had received illegal political telephone calls from the Gingrich operation.

New Hampshire law prevents political campaigns from using pre-recorded political messages, or "robo-calls," to contact residents on a national do-not-call list.

Gingrich's campaign denied wrongdoing.

Haley's endorsement, meanwhile, could help Romney in her state, which is third in line to pass judgment on the GOP field. How much it could help, however, is unknown.

Governors can use their statewide political networks to help presidential candidates. But polls show Haley is not as popular as she was following her November 2010 election.

Even so, she remains a favorite of tea party activists whose energy helped Republicans win across the country last fall. Their enthusiasm will be critical in helping the GOP presidential nominee next year, but Romney has struggled to court them.

South Carolina is a difficult state for Romney. He competed aggressively there during his first presidential run in 2008 only to bail out shortly before the primary. He had failed to ease voter concerns about his faith and reversals on social issues.

Haley's ties with Romney run deep.

She endorsed him in 2008 when she was in the legislature. Romney returned the favor when she ran for governor in 2010, a year when the tea party wielded big clout in key races across the country, including hers.

Chuck Boss: Rebecca Romijn's Sexy-Scary Character Was Supposed to Be a Man (omg!)

Chuck is sending in Rebecca Romijn to do a man's job.

"We created a character originally that was just going to be a man, sort of an ominous, scary figure who has a penchant for torture, which he considers his art form," co-creator Chris Fedak says of the former supermodel's guest role on Friday's episode (8/7c, NBC), "Chuck Versus the Curse." "But then we started thinking about it, we were like, 'What if Rebecca Romijn was this guy? That would be scary and sexy.'"

From Chuck to Hawaii Five-0: TV's sexiest crime fighters

The reconceived spy, named Robyn Cunnings, will give Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) trouble as they're trying to eliminate a harmful computer virus. Romijn is no stranger to filling deadly roles (Mystique in X-Men) or even characters with a male past (the transgendered Alexis Meade on Ugly Betty).

"She was game for [the role] and also has got a wicked sense of humor," Fedak says.

Meanwhile, new parents Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and Awesome (Ryan McPartlin) take some time for themselves with a date night, which naturally means that a babysitter for Clara is in order. Don't worry, fans ? it's not Jeffster! "Mom and Dad [Awesome] are babysitting," Fedak says. "We don't do a lot of baby in peril... yet."

The Year in Rewind: The worst of 2011

But this is Chuck, so no date night will remain romantic or calm for long. "Ryan McPartlin and Sarah Lancaster are getting drawn into the action," Fedak revealed. "They're very much the center of that episode. Watching Sarah Lancaster out in the field is great. She and Ryan are sexy, fun and exciting together."

Hmm, that sounds a bit like a Mr. & Mrs. Smith scenario, no? Lancaster has expressed interest in having Ellie pick up a gun. "Well, she doesn't blow anybody away," Fedak teases. "But I wonder if that might have changed after having a baby?"
