White people, here?s your one-time Canada Day special: Native people apologize back!

Canada Day has always been a mixed bag for Canada?s native people. It makes us think of many things: patriotism, flags, sunburned cottagers, barbeques and exploding fireworks. That?s the good stuff.

More Related to this Story

For some, though, it?s a reminder that it was four years ago when Prime Minister Stephen Harper apologized to the first nations, Inuit and M?tis inhabitants of this country for the imposition and effects of the infamous residential-school system.

Since then, much has been said and written about that apology: Did it go far enough? Too little too late? What?s next? That is something I am afraid only educated, wealthy white men in positions of power can decide.

However, some in the native community feel that perhaps we are being a little lax in not issuing an apology of our own.

We are not without some culpability. In the centuries that have passed since that fateful day of contact, we ourselves have been negligent and irresponsible in not acknowledging our liability in many regretful incidents and events in the past.

So in the spirit of cooperation, I would like to offer up these apologies to the people of Canada on behalf of the NAFNIP (native/aboriginal/first nations/indigenous people):

We hereby apologize for being so inconsiderate as to occupy land that, one day, your people would want. Even though we did not have a postal system or an Internet, this was an inexcusable oversight. We hope you are enjoying it.

We apologize for having so many politically correct and incorrect names for you to call us ? everything from native to aboriginal to first nations to wagon burner to status-card number 48759375876-1.

In retrospect, to make things easier for you, we should have stayed in India, where we were originally thought to have come from. Unfortunately today it is really hard to get decent palak paneer on the reserve.

We hereby apologize for not understanding the subtle connections between God, children and sexual abuse. Some are still struggling with appreciating this association.

They are forgetting that, early in the Bible, it says, ?Let there be white. And it was good.?

We apologize for wanting rights to minerals and other natural resources that exist beneath our feet. When you negotiated for our land, you meant to the Earth?s core.

We did not fully comprehend that when we were put on reserves where our rights to the land only went two or three feet below the surface.

Anything that falls down a sewer grate basically belongs to the Federal Government.

We apologize for being so concerned about the disappearances of so many native women.

We did not realize that the professional attitude of most law-enforcement agencies towards this issue was basically ?out of sight, out of mind.? From now on, we?ll report any native women that go missing as white women with dark tans. That should speed up response time.

No need to thank us.

We hereby apologize for straining the Canadian health system due to our propensity towards diseases like diabetes. I know it has been said we put the word ?die? in diabetes, but being introduced to all that Kraft Dinner and potato chips was definitely worth giving up the steady diet of salmon and deer.

I am sure the vegetarians are happy.

We apologize for launching so many land claims against the federal and provincial governments. One of our most ancient teachings tells us it is our sacred responsibility to make sure as many lawyers as possible are fed and looked after.

Where would they be without us?

We hereby apologize for wanting autonomy from the Federal bureaucracy of the DIA (Department of Indian Affairs). ? Wait a minute, make that DIAND (Department of Indian and Northern Development). ? Sorry, but I think it?s now called INAC (Indian and Northern Affairs Canada). ? No, I have just been informed the Ministry?s official name is now AANDC ? short for Aboriginal Affairs Northern Development Canada. ... Now I forget what my original point was.

And though it had nothing to do with us, we are sorry for obvious reasons for the unique acronym of a once-testy office known as the Government of Ontario Native Affairs Directorate.

Finally, and perhaps most of all, we apologize for helping Canada/Great Britain win the War of 1812 against the Americans. There are many in the native community who feel Barack Obama would be a far more interesting leader than Mr. Harper.

But in our defence, who could have guessed?

Drew Hayden Taylor is a playwright and filmmaker who lives on the Curve Lake First Nation in Central Ontario.

2012 SC Clean Energy Summit to be powered 100% by clean energy generated in SC

When the first-ever SC Clean Energy Summit takes place in Columbia on July 18, it will be powered entirely by renewable energy.

South Carolina Clean Energy Business Alliance (SCCEBA), which is organizing the summit, is working with Palmetto Clean Energy to purchase about 2250 kilowatt hours of electricity, an amount equivalent to what?s needed to power the one-day event. Palmetto Clean Energy or ?PaCE? is a non-profit organization that allows customers of South Carolina?s investor-owned utilities (Duke Energy, Progress Energy and SCE&G) to buy tax-deductible blocks of green, renewable energy. PaCE contributions are used to fund locally-produced renewable energy.

According to Program Manager Andrew Epting, SCCEBA has chosen to power its event with SC-generated clean energy to ?put its money where its mouth is.?

?SCCEBA exists to promote the development and use of clean energy in South Carolina,? Epting said. ?By powering the summit with clean energy, we can raise the visibility of South Carolina?s growing industry cluster and educate more people about the tremendous opportunity for South Carolina to become a national leader in this area.? According to the Clean Energy Census, a study commissioned by SCCEBA and completed by NC State University, South Carolina already has about 14,000 clean energy-related jobs.

By powering its summit with clean energy, SCCEBA also hopes to raise awareness that the opportunity exists to purchase clean energy credits, so other businesses and organizations can take advantage of them as well. Credits can be purchased online at www.PalmettoCleanEnergy.org.

The 2012 SC Clean Energy Summit is one of the Southeast?s premier clean energy conferences, featuring more than 30 expert speakers from the solar, wind, biomass, alternative fuel, hydrogen and fuel cell, energy efficiency, and clean energy finance industries. It will bring together South Carolina?s renewable energy and energy efficiency businesses, state and federal officials, regional and national clean energy organizations, financing sources, service providers to the industry, and those thinking about entering the clean energy business.

?We couldn?t be more excited about this event and what it means for South Carolina?s future,? said SCCEBA Executive Director Tom French. ?By uniting the clean energy businesses in the state, we can share progress, capitalize on opportunities today, and better position the state to benefit from growing investment and job creation in the green economy tomorrow. Also, by powering the event with renewable sources, we can shine a spotlight on South Carolina?s tremendous assets in renewable energy.?

The 2012 SC Clean Energy Summit is open to anyone interested in clean energy and the cost to attend is $30. To learn more or to register, visit www.SCCEBA.biz.

ExxonMobil CEO assailed for claims on climate change

Bazuki Muhammad / Reuters

"It's an engineering problem and there will be an engineering solution," ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson said of climate change.

By Martha C. White

Rex Tillerson's acknowledgement that fossil fuel consumption contributes to climate change should have been a PR coup for ExxonMobil when the company's CEO gave a major address this week. Instead, environmentalists blasted?Tillerson's assertion that the impact of climate change is not as serious as "lazy" journalists and an ?illiterate? public believe.

Tillerson won praise for reversing the company's long-standing denial of a correlation between climate change and the burning of fossil fuels. But environmentalists said Tillerson's remarks won?t sit well with many Americans, especially those affected by extreme weather, climate-related natural disasters and pollution.

Tillerson, speaking at the Council for Foreign Relations, said that while carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has a ?warming impact,? the science of climate change isn't good enough to say with certainty how severe that impact could be.?

?We've been working with a very good team at MIT now for more than 20 years on this area of modeling the climate. ... The competencies of the models are not particularly good," he said.

MIT's Ronald Prinn disputed that.

?The models are certainly good enough to clearly show the benefits of mitigation policies compared to no policy, in lowering risks,? said Prinn, director of the Center for Global Change Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. ?We cannot wait for perfection in climate forecasts before taking action.?

Tillerson also defended the controversial practice of extracting hydrocarbons from rocks deep underground by injecting them at high pressures with water and other liquids, a process called hydraulic fracturing or "fracking."?

"The consequences of a misstep in a well, while large to the immediate people that live around that well, in the great scheme of things are pretty small," he said.
?
That statement might draw disagreement from those "immediate people," said Melinda Pierce, associate director for national campaigns at the Sierra Club.?"Rex Tillerson should get out from behind his desk and actually meet those whose homes are threatened, whose drinking water is flammable and whose kids are getting sick because of companies like his."

Ultimately, Tillerson said humanity would simply adapt to the effects of a warmer earth. ?We have spent our entire existence adapting, OK? So we will adapt to this,? he said.

Environmentalists called this contention false.

?Adaptation and mitigation aren't an either/or anymore ? we have to do both," said Angela Anderson, climate and energy program director?at the Union of Concerned Scientists. "There are effects of climate change that are difficult if not impossible to adapt to," she said.
?
?There are two ways to address climate change ? mitigation and adaptation,? said?Kenneth Gillingham,?assistant professor of environmental and energy economics at Yale University. "I find it disingenuous that Tillerson?s remarks only mention spending more policy effort on adaptation."

The CEO?s tone struck many as being tone-deaf at best, callous at worst ? a perception that could be damaging to an energy company that is no stranger to public relations issues as well as environmental disasters.?"This is an industry that made $137 billion in profits last year. They're asking the rest of the world to adapt on the hardship they're imposing on other people," said Bob Deans, spokesman for the National Resource Defense Council?Action Fund.?

"ExxonMobil does have an agenda here," said Marcia Horowitz, senior executive vice president at public relations firm?Rubenstein Associates.?"Companies are not impartial and often have a self-interest in interpreting information to suit their needs.?

"Is it really OK for us to live slightly better off and have ExxonMobil make more money when it means that the Maldives will likely be under water and many poor in Bangladesh will likely face more common and more life-threatening floods?" said Gillingham.

Deans pointed to the thousands of people fleeing massive wildfires that are consuming homes in Colorado. "Ask them whether they think it's a good idea to adapt to that," Deans said.

NM mom jailed for overdue 'Twilight' book, DVDs

(AP) ? A New Mexico woman was arrested and spent a night in jail for not returning the book "Twilight" and two-DVD set "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" back to the library on time.

The Albuquerque Journal reports (http://bit.ly/MY6rJW ) Lori Teel was arrested and handcuffed at her Portales home in front of her five small children earlier this month for the $36 worth of library materials not returned since 2010.

Her attorney says arrest warrants were mailed last year to an address at which Teel hadn't lived since childhood, but Teal was arrested by officers investigating a disturbance.

Her charges were dismissed.

Apple quietly stops touting the fact that it has a virus-free platform

The half-a-trillion dollar company finally admits that its software isn't bulletproof

It's been one of the key selling points of Macs for years: Computers made by Apple?simply don't get viruses, right? Well, unfortunately,?recent computer virus outbreaks (yes, that's?outbreaks with an "S") have proven Macs to be vulnerable, and as a result, Apple is quietly scrubbing its site of its anti-viral claims.

Formerly, the?Apple website featured a section entitled "It doesn't get PC viruses," that included the line, "A Mac isn't susceptible to the thousands of viruses plaguing Windows-based computers." Now, however, the site section has been changed to simply read "It's built to be safe," and touts the built-in defenses the Mac has against viruses.

It seems somewhat obvious that the Flashback virus that targeted the?OS X operating system was the final straw for the Apple marketing department, but certainly, it isn't the only problem facing Macs and Mac users. According to computer?security company Sophos, nearly one in five Macs are infected with Windows malware, even if the unwanted code has no effect on the computers' performances.

Kris Humphries' Legal Team To Subpoena Kanye's Ex Amber Rose ...

Amber RoseKris Humphries is pulling out all the stops in his divorce drama from Kim Kardashian. Humphries lawyers are going to subpoena Kanye West?s ex-girlfriend, Amber Rose, because of her previous claims that Kanye and Kimmy hooked up several years ago and not recently as Kim has claimed; and the deposition is taking place as I type in Minnesota, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

In case you missed it, Amber Rose did an interview with ?Star? magazine where she was quoted saying this about Kim Kardashian below:

?They were both cheating on me and Reggie with each other?Kim is one of the main reasons why me and Kanye are not together. She?s a homewrecker!?

Little did Amber know back then that she would be a star witness in Kim?s divorce drama. This is going to be all kinds of juicy! And you know I?ll be all over this one!

Garmin Swim watch tracks your water workouts, we hit the pool (hands-on)

Garmin Swim watch tracks your water workouts, we hit the pool

Garmin is adding a new product to its line-up of fitness watches, and this one is dedicated to workouts of the aquatic variety. The $150 Garmin Swim tracks your distance swum, average pace, workout time and more, and it uploads those stats to the web to help monitor your progress. Though it's meant to be a part of your exercise routine, the Garmin Swim watch looks like your average plastic digi-timepiece. The watch has six buttons with functions for viewing the time of day, scrolling through the menu options, controlling the timer, viewing the menu and entering workout mode. The setup takes some getting used to, but the illustrative icons on the watch helped us get into the rhythm quickly.

Getting started with the Swim simply entails entering the size of your pool, with options to measure in yards or meters. Once that info is uploaded, you press the swim button and are ready to get splashing. We spent a solid half-hour doing laps, and the Swim duly recognized and recorded that we varied our strokes. Stopping the timer each time we took a break created a new interval for our workout, with a rundown of the elapsed time, distance in meters, number of strokes, type of stroke, total laps, average speed and calories burned. That's a lot of data to pore over, and Garmin lets you wirelessly upload it all to the Garmin Connect site. To do this, you have to pair the watch with your computer using a USB ANT stick: once it works, it's an efficient, easy way to review your workout, but it took us a few tries before our laptop recognized the watch. Garmin says the watch's battery will last a full year, which is plenty of time to log some serious laps. For more about the Swim, check out the press info past the break.

Common diabetes drugs associated with increased risk of death

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Compared to another popular drug, three widely used diabetes medications are associated with a greater risk of death, a large new analysis finds. The results were presented June 25 at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

The drugs, glipizide, glyburide, and glimepiride, are known as sulfonylureas, which help decrease blood-sugar levels among type 2 diabetes patients by stimulating the pancreas to produce insulin. In the past, these medications were considered comparable to one another in terms of effectiveness and safety. Recently, however, research has shown some sulfonylureas may be safer than others. These findings led to this latest research, which compared them to another type of blood-sugar-reducing drug known as metformin. All four medications are available under low-cost, generic labels.

"We have clearly demonstrated that metformin is associated with a substantial reduction in mortality risk, and, thus, should be the preferred first-line agent, if one has a choice between metformin and a sulfonylurea," said study lead author Kevin M. Pantalone, D.O., an endocrinologist at Summa Western Reserve Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls, OH, who conducted this study in conjunction with a team of researchers from Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH.

In the United States, nearly 26 million people, or 8 percent of the population, have diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many of these patients also have other underlying medical conditions, including heart, or coronary artery, disease.

Investigators found that all three sulfonylureas studied were associated with a more than 50 percent greater risk of death compared to metformin. Additionally, among diabetes patients with heart disease, only glimepiride did not increase the risk of death compared to metformin. In contrast, glipizide was associated with a 41 percent, and glyburide with a 38 percent greater risk.

"Since many patients with type 2 diabetes also have coronary artery disease, our results could potentially impact the care of a large number of patients," Pantalone said. "In these patients, we now know that glimepiride appears to be safer than the other commonly prescribed sulfonylureas, glipizide and glyburide, available in the United States."

For this retrospective study, using the electronic health-record system at Cleveland Clinic, the investigators identified 23,915 patients with type 2 diabetes who previously had received treatment with one of the four medications. Overall, the study population's average age (years) was 62, and 50 percent were male. Among the subgroup with heart disease, the average age was 68, and 69 percent were male. Both groups comprised primarily Caucasian patients. The median follow-up was slightly more than two years.

According to Pantalone, this research serves as a reminder that adverse events can occur with any medication. "All drugs have risks, even those which are generic and relatively inexpensive," he said. "It is important to talk to with your doctors about which drugs may be better and safer options, which may vary depending on your other health conditions."

In addition to the data from the hospital electronic health-record system, investigators analyzed death statistics from the Social Security Death Index. The study was supported through a grant from Astra Zeneca.

First Fukushima seafood sold since nuke crisis

The first seafood caught off Japan's Fukushima coastline since last year's nuclear disaster went on sale Monday, but the offerings were limited to octopus and marine snails because of persisting fears about radiation.

Octopus and whelk, a kind of marine snail, were chosen for the initial shipments because testing for radioactive cesium consistently measured no detectable amounts, according to the Fukushima Prefectural (state) fishing cooperative. They were caught Friday and boiled so they last longer while being tested for radiation before they could be sold Monday.

Flounder, sea bass and other fish from Fukushima can't be sold yet because of contamination. It was unclear when they will be approved for sale as they measure above the limit in radiation set by the government. The government is testing for radioactive iodine as well, but its half-life is shorter than cesium and thus is less worrisome.

"It was crisp when I bit into it, and it tasted so good," said Yasuhiro Yoshida, who oversees the seafood section at York Benimaru supermarket in Soma, which sold out of about 30 kilograms (65 pounds) of the snails and 40 kilograms (90 pounds) of the octopus that had been shipped to the store.

Japan: Fukushima nuclear pool not unstable

The March 11 earthquake and tsunami last year left the coastlines of northeastern Japan devastated, and displaced tens of thousands of people. Entire towns were contaminated by the radiation leaking from Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, where three reactors went into meltdowns.

"I was filled with both uncertainty and hope today, but I was so happy when I found out the local supermarket had sold out by 3 p.m.," said Hirofumi Konno, an official in charge of sales at the fishing cooperative in Soma city in coastal Fukushima.

PhotoBlog: 36 views of the Fukushima exclusion zone

He said he hoped crabs would be next to go on sale as radiation had not been detected in them, but he acknowledged things will take time, perhaps years, especially for other kinds of fish. Radiation amounts have been decreasing, but cesium lasts years.

The octopus and snail were selling at almost half of what they fetched before the disaster, he said. But he said people were buying Fukushima seafood to show support for local fishermen. The items were available locally but not in the whole prefecture or the Tokyo area.

Nobuyuki Yagi, a University of Tokyo professor studying the fisheries industry after the disaster, said serious concerns remain over whether anyone would buy Fukushima fish, and the key lay in finding the types of fish that don't store radioactive elements.

"Fishing cannot survive unless people buy the fish. That may seem obvious, but Fukushima is facing up to this," he said in a statement earlier this month.

Japan to lift entry ban on nuclear no-go zones

Farmlands have also been contaminated, and every grain of rice will be tested at harvest in some areas before they can be sold. The image of Fukushima produce has been seriously tarnished, and worried consumers, especially those with children, are shunning Fukushima-grown food.

"We are in for the long haul," Konno said in a telephone interview.

Call It Like It Is | Melanie Dorsey ~ A Sufficient Grace

?

Creativity is in our spiritual DNA. Made in the image of God ? the GO{L}D Standard when it comes to creativity ? we are creative beings.

Have you ever considered that when God gave Adam the task of naming the animals, it? was a creative endeavor?

?Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.? (Genesis 2:19 NKJV)

God brought the animals to Adam to see what he would call them! Let that settle deep. I?ll be honest with you. Sometimes I hesitate to call myself a speaker and a writer. Sometimes I?m tempted to remove those identifications from my blog, facebook and twitter.

Why?

Because sometimes I feel like a fraud?a poser?an imposter.

Real writers have published books and articles. Real speakers have a calendar dotted with engagements.

Several years ago I wanted to challenge myself to be a runner. I analyzed what it takes to be a runner. The right shoes. The right clothes. The right pace. The right body type. And after all of that I settled on this one thing. You may need to sit down for this epiphany.

To be a real runner ? run.

Are you thinking what I thought? That?s not very deep. In fact, it?s too simple.

I know. Yet, sometimes simple is the deepest kind of deep.

Notice I didn?t challenge myself to start running. I wanted more than that. I wanted to be a runner. Call myself a runner. Be identified as a runner.

I?ve entered a few races ? 5k?s, 10k?s, a triathlon (team member), and a half marathon. It?s been months since I ran in my last race. But you know what? I?m still a runner. A real runner. Because I run.

It?s been a while since I submitted an article for publication. But I?m still a writer. A real writer. And though the speaking engagements on my calendar are spotty, I?m still a Bible teacher and a speaker. A real one.

Last summer as I was praying and pondering about the ministry of speaking, teaching and writing, I felt that still, small voice tell me to call it what it is.

  • To create is to bring something into existence.

God created the animals.

God brought the creation before Adam to be named.

If I?m not honest and brave enough to call myself what I know I am, would that part of me wander aimlessly on this earth waiting for its ceremonial naming?

Regardless of where my writing and speaking may or may not take me, my heart is? fullest when I?m creating words that speak God?s truth?when I?m crafting lines of prose or poetry. God brought those gifts to me and waited to see what I would call them.

Teacher. Speaker. Writer

For real.

What do you call yourself? Are you afraid to call yourself what you know you are at heart? Leader, teacher, speaker, artist, idea maker, actor, writer, decorator, designer?
