Another look at the LG Optimus Vu -- with television antenna in tow
The LG Optimus Vu is poised to become the latest oversized smartphone when it makes its debut at Mobile World Congress in a week. And tonight, LG global communications director Ken Hong on Twitter showed a picture of it playing Korean KBS TV, with what appears to be an antenna sticking out of one corner. That's not new for Asian phones. The LG Optimus Z we reviewed back in 2010 sported an antenna as well, though for obvious reasons it doesn't do much for us here in the States.

How Environmental Issues Are Changing Our Homes

As people find ways to live that are easier on the environment and various industries upgrade their products and services to be more environmentally friendly, the world around us will change. The focus is often on our homes because this is where we use the greatest amount of energy and where we spend the most time. Even the smallest of change can mean a lot when it comes to reducing your energy bill or leading a greener life. Those who believe what individuals do has little bearing on the changing environment and nature are still searching for ways to reduce their energy costs in their homes and make their houses more efficient. Options like installing geothermal systems may seem extreme or be just the change you are looking for. You can look into a furnace tune up or make a drastic change that will alter how you live and what you spend. Regardless of how much you want to change, there are plenty of options.
One of the biggest ways people are changing how they live is by conserving water.
Now water heaters are available that allow you to enjoy hot water without having to wait for it to heat. People are installing low-flow toilets in their home, cutting back on the amount of water used without making a huge sacrifice. There are subtle ways you can reduce your water consumption without making your home uncomfortable. If you are concerned about inconvenience or discomfort, consider a few of the options that are barely noticeable when it comes to water consumption, at least until you receive your water bill.
For years now, households have been recycling. Many communities now require it, but if your city does not, take the project on yourself. Look for ways to cut back on packaging when shopping and when you have no choice but to discard plastic containers or cardboard, do so in a responsible manner.
Also, look for products that use recycled materials and look for ways in your home to reuse items. Before you throw anything away, ask yourself if there could be an alternate use for it.
A great way to combine environmental responsibility with improving your health is to grow some of your own food. Planting a garden will save you money at the supermarket and it will allow you to feed your family healthy food that has been in your possession from the very start. This reduces or eliminates the chemicals your family is exposed to and it cuts down on transportation cost and pollution.
Finally, consider big household investments. There are plenty of products on the market that may be costly, but overtime they will make a big impact. You can also use them as a selling feature, should you ever decide to move. If you are looking to make big environmental changes in your home, consider installing solar panels. This helps with the heating and the lighting and will even improve the style of your home. Work with a company that is aware of the environment and you will soon feel as if you have made a significant change in the world.

Whitney Houston fans to follow funeral on Internet (AP)
NEW YORK ? They won't be there in person, but singer Whitney Houston's millions of fans worldwide will be able to share in her homecoming service Saturday as they watch her private funeral on the Internet.
It will provide a much-needed connection for fans who have lacked a formal place to eulogize Houston, one of the world's best-selling artists who died in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Saturday at the age of 48.
Some have gathered and placed flowers outside the Newark, N.J., church where the funeral will be held by invitation-only at the request of Houston's family, who wish to maintain some privacy. Others have stopped by the funeral home. But many have longed to share more fully in commemorating the superstar's life, and have shown their grief in one of the few ways available to them ? by buying her music.
Houston's funeral will be at New Hope Baptist Church, where she sang as a child. Her eulogy will be given by gospel singer Marvin Winans, a Grammy Award winner and longtime family friend. Afterward, Houston will be buried in Fair View Cemetery in Westfield, N.J., according to her death certificate. Her father, John Russell Houston Jr., was buried there in 2003.
Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, investigators for the coroner's office have subpoenaed records from the singer's doctors and pharmacies who dispensed medication found in the hotel room where she died.
Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said such inquiries are routine in virtually all death investigations.
Investigators have not said what medications they have recovered from Houston's room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The singer was found underwater in a bathtub by a member of her staff hours before she planned to attend a chic pre-Grammy gala. Police have said there were no signs of foul play and Winter said there were no signs of trauma on her body when an autopsy was conducted on Sunday.
It will be weeks before toxicology results reveal the medications and quantities, if any, that were in Houston's system when she died. The Grammy winner's history of substance abuse has added to the speculation that her death may have been caused by prescription drugs.
In a 2009 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Houston talked about how she was deeply shaken by the death of singer Michael Jackson. Jackson died at age 51 that year from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol.
Houston recalled taping a show celebrating Jackson's 30th anniversary celebration in 2001. Both stars were strikingly thin.
"I was getting scared," she told Winfrey. "I was looking at myself going, `No, I don't want this to be like this. This can't happen. Not both of us.'"
Like Jackson, Houston was on the verge of a career comeback before her death on Feb. 11. And, like Jackson, sales of her recordings have soared since her passing as fans try to recapture her glory days in the 1980s and 1990s. Old recordings have been propelled to the top of sales charts on iTunes and Amazon.com.
Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, announced Wednesday that The Associated Press will be allowed a camera at Saturday's funeral in Newark. The AP will stream the service on http://livestream.com/aplive. The event also will be available to broadcasters via satellite.

EU court: Social networks can't be piracy brakes (Reuters)
BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Online social networks cannot be forced to block users from downloading songs illegally, as this would push up their costs and infringe privacy, Europe's highest court said on Thursday, adding to a worldwide debate on internet policing.
The Luxembourg-based Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) was ruling on a case involving two Belgian companies: music royalty collecting society SABAM and online social network Netlog.
SABAM asked a Belgian court in 2009 to order Netlog to stop its users illegally downloading songs from the society's portfolio. The Belgian judges sought advice from the Luxembourg court.
But the ECJ backed Netlog.
"The owner of an online social network cannot be obliged to install a general filtering system, covering all its users, in order to prevent the unlawful use of musical and audio-visual work," the ECJ said in a statement.
"Such an injunction would result in a serious infringement of Netlog's freedom to conduct its business since it would require Netlog to install a complicated, costly, permanent computer system at its own expense," it said.
Judges also said forcing companies to install a filter to identify, analyze and process users' personal information might infringe their privacy and could result in the blocking of lawful content.
The obligations of internet-based services to police online piracy have sparked heated argument recently, as entertainment companies and publishers attempt to enforce controls.
Last month, U.S. lawmakers sought to introduce anti-piracy legislation, but backed down after intense lobbying by internet companies and concerns by the White House. The technology companies argued that this would infringe on freedom of speech, internet freedom and be difficult to enforce.
In Europe, thousands of protesters rallied on the weekend of February 11 and 12 against ACTA, an international anti-piracy agreement that some European countries have signed. The protesters fear ACTA might curb their freedom to download movies and music for free and encourage internet surveillance.
Social networking sites such as Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and Google's YouTube base their business models on the sharing of users' views and information, as does Netlog.
SABAM is one of 24 national collecting societies across the 27-country EU that collect royalty payments on behalf of authors, singers and performers.
In a separate case last year, the ECJ dismissed a bid by SABAM to get Scarlet, a unit of Belgian telecom operator Belgacom, to stop its users from illegal downloads of songs.
The case the ECJ pronounced on Thursday is C-360/10, Belgische Vereniging van Auteurs, Componisten en Uitgevers (SABAM) v Netlog NV.
