Facebook Privacy in Demand: Users Don't Want You Prying

Mark Zuckerberg asserted two years ago that privacy had become obsolete. We've entered a new age, he declared, where people are willing to share more, with more people.

"People have really gotten comfortable not only sharing more information and different kinds, but more openly and with more people," Zuckerberg said in 2010. "That social norm is just something that has evolved over time."
sent

Not so fast. There's no denying we share on social networks, posting everything from what we eat to who we're engaged to, but privacy isn't extinct or close to it.

Two new studies suggest people on Facebook are pushing back against the share-all culture and stepping up the ways they protect their personal information from strangers. It looks like private is the new public.

Researchers at Polytechnic Institute of New York University tracked the privacy settings of 1.4 million Facebook profiles belonging to New Yorkers over a 15-month period between March 2010 and June 2011. They found a "dramatic decrease in the amount of information Facebook users reveal about themselves to the general public" and the authors concluded that the users became "dramatically more private" during the period, according to their report.

Over the same period, users stepped up the frequency with which they hid personal details in their public profiles, which are visible to anyone on Facebook, a friend or otherwise. To measure this, the researchers tracked nine characteristics often included on public profiles -- "friend lists, age, high-school name and graduation year, network, relationship, gender, interested in, hometown and current city" -- and monitored whether members shared fewer details over time.

They did: People wanted less personal information shared publicly, and the share of users who hid all nine attributes from their profiles more than doubled from 12.3 percent to 33 percent between 2010 and 2011. The share of users who hid their friend lists more than tripled during the 15 months, increasing from 17.2 percent of users to 52.6 percent.

"This is a large shift, especially if we consider that Facebook changed its default settings to disclose more information during this period," the researchers noted in their report, titled "Facebook Users Have Become Much More Private: A Large-Scale Study."

The Pew Internet and American Life Project also found that social networking users are taking greater care to manage their reputations and control their privacy online.

The two-year period between 2009 and 2011 witnessed an increase in the number of people who said they had untagged photos of themselves (37 percent in 2011, up from 30 percent in 2009), deleted comments about themselves (44 percent, up from 36 percent), or unfriended individuals (63 percent, up from 56 percent).

Both studies found women were more proactive about protecting their personal information than men. Sixty-seven percent of women on social networks limit their profiles to their friends, while just 48 percent of men do the same, noted Pew.

The data used in the NYU-Poly study was collected before a few important changes to Facebook's site, including the launch of simplified, inline privacy controls in August 2011 and the launch last fall of "frictionless" apps that allow users to instantly and seamlessly broadcast any action they take on a third-party app. NYU-Poly computer science professor Keith Ross, who co-authored the study, noted that he and his colleagues are doing additional research to see whether the move toward more closed-off public profiles will continue.

Ross also predicted that as public profiles become more restricted, users may have more difficulty meeting new people or reconnecting with acquaintances.

"As people become more private in their public profiles and people are more privacy conscious, it's going to be harder for people to discover each other," said Ross.

These statistics paint social networkers as an increasingly privacy-savvy group of individuals who are concerned about who sees what details about them online and are taking steps to protect themselves.

There's an important distinction to be made between oversharing and not caring. It's true that users bombard their friends with mundane details about their snacks, runs, burps and buys. But that's when they know their audience -- not when they're addressing the world at large. We're less inclined to broadcast our status updates to strangers or reveal intimate details to the unknown, and social media companies would be wise to take note of just how far social norms have -- and haven't -- evolved.

(AP) ? Kevin Durant scored 33 points, Russell Westbrook added 19 and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Los Angeles Lakers 100-85 Thursday night to head into the All-Star break tied for the league's best record.

The Thunder won their 12th straight home game and denied Los Angeles the chance to head into the midseason break with back-to-back statement wins on the road. The Lakers had won at defending NBA champion Dallas a night earlier and were trying to follow it by knocking off the other half of last year's West finals.

Kobe Bryant scored 24 points but went 7 for 24 from the field for Los Angeles. Pau Gasol had 22 points and nine rebounds.

Oklahoma City and Miami both have NBA-leading 27-7 records at the break.

The Thunder pulled away in the second half to win their second in a row against the Lakers, who won eight of the teams' previous nine regular-season meetings and knocked Oklahoma City out of the 2010 playoffs in the first round.

The Lakers, once able to use their size advantage against Oklahoma City, struggled to get those same inside baskets against the remade Thunder interior of NBA blocks leader Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins.

Center Andrew Bynum started out 2 for 12 before finally hitting three in a row midway through the fourth quarter. His two-handed slam got the Lakers within 81-74 with 7 minutes remaining, only for Oklahoma City to come right back by scoring the next seven points.

Westbrook converted a three-point play, followed by James Harden's two-handed slam and a two-handed putback dunk by Perkins with 4:29 left.

Harden added a second-chance 3-pointer from the right wing off of Perkins' offensive rebound with 2:10 left, leaping in celebration as he ran back on defense. Durant's free throw after Metta World Peace's technical foul 17 seconds later gave the Thunder an insurmountable 95-81 advantage.

Ibaka added 11 points and 13 rebounds for Oklahoma City, which limited L.A. to 39 percent shooting while making 47 percent of its own shots.

The Thunder emerged ahead 46-43 after a closely contested first half, with Westbrook connecting on a 3-pointer from the left wing with 0.8 seconds left and Durant stealing Bynum's inbounds pass along the left baseline before hitting a jumper before the buzzer.

Bynum and World Peace, his intended target, walked off the court discussing what went wrong.

The Lakers would never lead again.

Durant converted a three-point play and Daequan Cook hit a 3-pointer during a burst of eight straight points for Oklahoma City midway through the third quarter, and the lead stretched to 71-58 when Cook followed Harden's slam by hitting a right wing jumper with 1:43 left in the period.

NOTES: After looking back at the video, Los Angeles coach Mike Brown said he thought a foul by Dallas' Brendan Hawyood on Gasol in the final minute Wednesday should have been a flagrant foul. "I'm sure the league has seen it and I'm sure that they'll take whatever action they think is necessary for it. That definitely was not just a normal foul or a regular foul," Brown said. ... Durant was a late addition to the 3-Point Contest at the All-Star game, giving him a chance at redemption after last year's last-place effort in which he scored only six of a possible 30 points. "His last year's performance was pathetic. ... Right now, he needs coaching," Brooks said. We need to bring back the H-O-R-S-E contest so he can bring something home." Durant won the H-O-R-S-E contest in 2009 and 2010. ... Perkins is just two technical fouls away from a one-game suspension, with 11 through 34 games. "It's going to be very difficult for Perk to not engage in any physical play on the court that referees deem that's a little excessive but he has to," Brooks said.

Romney, Gingrich back arming Syria's rebels

NBC's Richard Engel reports on the tense situation in Syria where an American reporter and French photojournalist were recently killed.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

U.S. Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich lent their support to the idea of arming the Syrian opposition in its fight to topple President Bashar Assad, as a group of more than 70 countries prepared to discuss the crisis.

Romney and Gingrich, speaking in Wednesday night's GOP presidential candidate debate, both advocated helping the rebels to defend themselves.

On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton heads to Tunisia for a meeting of the Friends of Syria group of countries to look at ways to assist Assad's opponents, which now include hundreds of defected military officers and soldiers.

?

The Times newspaper in the U.K.,?which operates behind a paywall,?said the group?would discuss a plan to set up a humanitarian zone along Syria's border with Turkey to protect protesters and also consider proposals to create aid corridors and send protected medical convoys into Syria to treat the wounded.

Marie Colvin, an American-born war reporter for The Sunday Times newspaper in the U.K. and a French photographer, Remi Ochlik, have been killed in Syria. ITN's Tim Ewart has a clip from one of Colvin's last reports.

The Times said the group's priority was to persuade Assad's regime to agree to a two-hour cease-fire every day in the city of Homs.

On Wednesday, Syrian government forces killed more than 80 people in assaults on villages and an artillery barrage on the restive city of Homs, including two Western journalists, American reporter Marie Colvin and French photographer Remi Ochlik.

Journalist needs urgent medical care
Syrian activists said at least two other Western journalists ? French reporter Edith Bouvier of Le Figaro and British photographer Paul Conroy of the Sunday Times ? were wounded in Wednesday's shelling.

Amateur video posted online showed Bouvier and Conroy in a makeshift clinic.

NYT: As others isolate Syria, Chavez ships fuel to it

Bouvier had her left leg tied from the thigh down in a cast. A doctor in the video explained that she needed emergency medical care. Conroy appeared in the video and the doctors said he had deep gashes in his left leg.

A statement by Syria's Information Minister Adnan Mahmoud said there was "no information" about Colvin, Ochlik and other foreign journalists in Syria who entered without official permission, the state-run news agency SANA reported.

It warned all foreign journalists to come forward to "regularize their status."

Speaking at a CNN debate in Mesa, Arizona, Romney said the United States needed to team up with allies to help the rebels.

American, French journalists killed in Syria

"We need to work with Saudi Arabia and with Turkey to say, 'You guys provide the kind of weaponry that's needed to help the rebels inside Syria,'" the former Massachusetts governor said.

The Republican seen most likely to face President Barack Obama in November's presidential election, Romney said such support was needed to turn Syria away from Iran at a critical time when Tehran was possibly trying to develop nuclear weapons.

Activists: Scores killed as Syria targets civilians

"If we can turn Syria and Lebanon away from Iran, we finally have the capacity to get Iran to pull back," Romney said. He added that the United States should make it clear that military action would be taken if Iran pursued nuclear weapons.

Gingrich slams Obama
Speaking at the debate, Gingrich said that U.S. allies ? which he did not name ? were covertly helping destroy the Assad regime, and that there were weapons available in the region to arm the opposition.

"There are plenty of Arab-speaking groups that would be quite happy. There are lots of weapons available in the Middle East," he said, taking a swipe at the Obama administration's policy on Syria.

"This is an administration which, as long as you're America's enemy, you're safe. You know, the only people you've got to worry about is if you're an American ally."
