Egypt soccer violence highlights instability under military rule

Hundreds were injured and at least one reportedly killed in Cairo today in clashes with police. Protesters were upset that police did little to thwart Wednesday's soccer violence.

A protest by soccer fans angry over the deaths of more than 70 people after a match devolved into clashes with police last night, turning streets of downtown Cairo once again into an urban battle zone. Hundreds were wounded and at least one person was reportedly killed in the capital after riot police stopped soccer fans and protesters attempting to march to the Ministry of Interior, which oversees the police force.

The outpouring of anger was sparked by fighting between soccer fans after a match Wednesday in Port Said, when police did little to prevent or stop the violence that killed a shocking number of people.

But it?s not just about soccer ? protesters say the deaths were just the tipping point after a year in which Egyptians have been repeatedly attacked and brutalized by security forces they say do more to protect the military rulers than the people, while the dreams of the revolution have been repeatedly stalled.

"We're here because of everything, because of the people who died on Mohammed Mahmoud Street, on Qasr al-Aini Street, and all the people they [the security forces] have killed in the past year," says Islam Said, a student at Cairo University and a fan of the Ahly club, whose fans were attacked yesterday. "We're tired, we want real security, we want real change."

In Cairo, after several hours in which protesters taunted the police, punctuated by stone throwing and attempts at breaking down police barriers, police shot tear gas at the crowds. Clashes began and lasted through the night. Protesters reported that police were using birdshot as well as tear gas. A health ministry official said two people were killed by gunfire in Suez, where protests also took place.

Side effect of military rule?

Such clashes, which have become an almost common occurrence in downtown Cairo, seem to be an effect of the inherent instability created by continued military rule, and many of the protesters say such outbreaks will not stop before the military steps down.

The ruling military council has pledged to hand over power by July, after a presidential election. The renewed violence may strengthen activists and parties who have called for presidential elections to be held sooner, before a constitution is drafted.

The Muslim Brotherhood?s Freedom and Justice party (FJP), which holds the most seats in parliament, has not joined in such calls. But it has flexed the muscles of the newly elected parliament. Yesterday the body voted in favor of a motion submitted by Essam El Erian, an FJP leader, to hold the interior minister accountable for the deaths in Port Said, and to summon him to be questioned by a parliamentary committee.

Mr. Erian called it an important move to hold leaders accountable. ?The ministry of interior and the police have not done its job to keep security and to prevent incidents, and of course this means that this ministry, as a whole, must be reformed again and cleaned from the leaders who were in the previous regime.?

More clashes today

Clashes between protesters and police continued Friday, even as some urged the protesters to withdraw from the streets surrounding the interior ministry back to nearby Tahrir square, to prevent more violence.

Overnight, the protesters tore down the wall of cement blocks that the military erected during street fighting in the same vicinity in November, to separate police from protesters. Crowds cheered wildly Thursday night, chanting "Freedom!" as youths struggled to dislodge the massive blocks, using ropes and traffic barricades as pry bars. They also called for the execution of de facto leader Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, and cursed the government.

(AP) ? The children at Miramonte Elementary School never complained about their third-grade teacher. Not, authorities said, when he blindfolded them, not when he put tape over their mouths or even placed live cockroaches on their faces.

He told them it was a game and then photographed them, creating images that would eventually lead to his arrest, investigators said of Mark Berndt, who is scheduled to be arraignment Wednesday on charges that he committed lewd acts on 23 boys and girls, ages 6 to 10, between 2008 and 2010. He has hired a lawyer and has made no statements to authorities, said Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

The investigation began when a film processor found Berndt's photos more than a year ago. Since the discovery, the school district fired Berndt and police put him under surveillance.

"If it wasn't for the film processor, this could still be continuing today," said sheriff's Lt. Carlos Marquez.

Berndt was arrested Monday at his home in Torrance and was being held on $2.3 million bail.

Some parents picking up their pre-kindergarteners at the school on Tuesday complained that officials at the school in South Los Angeles should have notified them when the photos were found.

"My concern is why, if the principal knew this in advance, why didn't he inform us?" said Gloria Polanco, the mother of a second- and a third-grader. "How long has he been doing this?"

The probe began after the film processor, who is required by state law to report suspicions of child abuse and molestation, turned over some 40 photographs to authorities.

About 400 photos were found at Berndt's home and at the photo lab during subsequent searches. It's not clear how many different children were pictured. At least 10 youngsters in the photos have not yet been identified.

Some photos showed Berndt with his arm around children or his hand over their mouths. Some photos showed children with live bugs the size of hissing cockroaches on their mouths or faces.

Others depicted girls with what appears to be a spoon up to their mouths as if they were going to ingest a clear-white liquid. Children were fed Berndt's semen from a spoon or on cookies, Marquez said.

Kids reported being fed something distasteful. A blue plastic spoon and container found in the trash in his classroom tested positive for his semen, authorities said.

Police recommended the children in the photos be tested for sexually transmitted diseases. There also may be more victims given the length of time that Berndt taught at the school, Marquez said.

Authorities could have arrested Berndt on misdemeanor charges when the investigation began but chose to build a stronger felony case, Marquez said. He could get a life sentence if he is convicted.

At first, neither the parents nor the children believed they had been molested, so there wasn't much reaction, according to Whitmore. It was only after the matter of the semen was raised that they became alarmed.

Berndt, who has no previous arrest record, was placed under surveillance and is not believed to have had contact with children during the investigation. The childless bachelor lives a few blocks from two parks and an elementary school.

As for surveillance of Berndt, Whitmore said, "It was routine. It wasn't 24-7. We knew his whereabouts."

The incidents occurred during school hours but not all the children were his students, Marquez said.

"The reason some of the kids are not his students, per se, is that during the lunch breaks or recess, he'd go out to the playground and entice them back to the classroom," Marquez said.

"They didn't know they were being violated in that manner," he said. "They just thought it was a game."

Berndt was a teaching assistant in the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1976 and 1977 and he began teaching at Miramonte in 1979, according to a district work history obtained by the Los Angeles Times.

Berndt had no disciplinary actions on file and performed up to standards in his last five evaluations over the last decade, according to the document.

Miramonte Principal Martin Sandoval said he wanted to express his sympathy to the children's families.

Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy said in a statement that he was notified of the investigation last January and removed Berndt from the classroom the same day. The school board then fired him, he said.

While Berndt may be long gone from the school, the incident has left its mark.

"My children won't be coming back here," said Kimberly Kirklin, whose teenage daughter was in Berndt's class three years ago. "He preyed on our innocents. He tainted a whole neighborhood."

Berndt is scheduled for an arraignment Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court. He has hired a lawyer and has made no statements to authorities, Whitmore said.

RV Boondocking News: Winter boondocker? Be careful on the ice

RVers who venture out in the cold are often familiar with icy driving conditions. But there's another danger afforded by ice: Winter recreation on ice. Sports like ice-fishing, skating, or walking about on a frozen pond. A few pointers can help you avoid going up the creek--even a frozen one.

"When is it safe to walk on ice?" is a $64,000 question. Sure, water freezes at 32 degrees, but that doesn't mean if the weather is below freezing that the ice is safe. The safest approach is to wait to walk on ice until after safety officials have indicated that a given body is safe. Even then, never consider the ice 100% safe. Always "partner" on the ice, never walk (skate, etc) on ice alone. Be careful around snow-covered ice, as the thickness under snow can't safely be assumed.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources provides these general ice thickness guidelines:

2" or less - STAY OFF
4" - Ice fishing or other activities on foot
5" - Snowmobile or ATV
8" - 12" - Car or small pickup
12" - 15" - Medium truck

These are general guidelines, there are many other factors that can make ice safe or unsafe.

What if the unthinkable happens--and someone falls through the ice? For the victim, the most important survival tactic is staying calm. Don't take time to struggle out of clothing, turn in the direction from where you wound up in the water, put your hands on an unbroken ice area, and kick your feet to try and get a push out of the water and back up on the ice. Once back up on the ice, don't try standing, roll or slide across the ice toward safety.

If you can't get back up out of the water, stay calm to conserve energy. Call for help. If you see someone fall through ice, stay back, call 911 immediately. The only safe way to try a rescue is reaching the victim with an object--not with yourself. Tree branches, oars, ski poles, even a fishing rod can extend your reach without putting you in danger of going into the drink yourself. Carrying a few safety supplies when out on the ice can be helpful. A rope or webbing that can be stowed in a pocket can be tossed out to a victim. Some wear a personal flotation device (we used to call them "life jackets") when venturing out on ice.

As heart rending as it may seem, if you can't reach the victim with what you have on hand, the best thing for all concerned is to call 911 and wait for help to arrive.

More importantly we want to discuss how paid website directory submissions can be better. I think the single biggest factor that gives paid web directory submissions an advantage over free submissions is the time in which your website will actually be added to the directory.

Nothing beats free in life. Or is it nothing in life is free? Either way, we are tempted to look at free web directory submissions versus paid submissions to see which is better.

Keep in mind that if you do enough free website submissions there will be many that accept and include your site right away, but every paid web submission is guaranteed to include your website within a day or two. I guess it all comes down to what is important to you.

Sea Wolf (for iPhone)

The original Sea Wolf was a 1976 World War II-themed coin-op game that came with a periscope that entertainment-seekers would use to blast Axis ships out of the water. Fast forward 36 years and the game now lives in the iPhone or iPod touch courtesy of a $1.99 remake that manages to capture the simple, addictive nature of the original while adding modern bells and whistles.

Simple, Fun Premise
Sea Wolf's gameplay is simple: you sink enemy ships and planes with a variety of firepower, while shooting crates for power ups. iDevices, of course, lack built-in periscopes, but you can target foes using the on-screen crosshair by tilting your phone or media player to the left or right. Tapping a fire button icon launches a torpedo, while dragging the cross hair across the screen lets you send off a stream of anti-aircraft projectile from the deck gun. The controls are responsive and work well.

Each level consists of completing a challenge (such as destroying a bridge, or downing aircraft) while meeting a point total. Should your ship take heavy damage, or you run out of torpedoes, the game ends. If, however, you run out of torpedoes after completing the mission objectives, Sea Wolf kindly advances you to the next stage. A nice touch.

Graphics and Sound
Sea Wolf's graphics are simple?not bad, just simple. Graphics whores will gripe about the low-key graphics, but what's there is serviceable. Still, the game could use some visual pop?the color scheme is a bit drab. Military-style drumming sets the combat tone, and the in-game sounds are crisp and satisfying.

Should You Engage Sea Wolf?
If you're in need a quick distraction while making the commute, standing in line at the post office, or waiting in the doctor's office, Sea Wolf's simple, jump-in-and-jump-out gameplay is a welcome diversion. It could use a more vibrant color scheme, but it's a $1.99 game you should check out.

Will Facebook deliver an IPO surprise?

(AP) ? Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg turns up at business conventions in a hoodie. "Cocky" is the word used to describe him most often, after "billionaire." He was Time's person of the year at 26.

So when he takes Facebook public, why would he follow the Wall Street rules?

The company is expected to file as early as Wednesday to sell stock on the open market in what will be the most talked-about initial public offering since Google in 2004, maybe since the go-go 1990s.

Around the nation, regular investors and IPO watchers are anticipating some kind of twist ? perhaps a provision for the 800 million users of Facebook, a company that promotes itself as all about personal connections, to get in on the action.

"Pandemonium is what I expect in terms of demand for this stock," says Scott Sweet, senior managing partner at IPO Boutique, an advisory firm. "I don't think Wall Street would want to anger Facebook users."

The most successful young technology companies have a history of doing things differently. Google's IPO prospectus contained a letter from its founders to investors that said the company believed in the motto "Don't be evil."

Facebook declined to comment, but Reena Aggarwal, a finance professor who has studied IPOs at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business, believes Zuckerberg will emulate Google's philosophy, at least in principle.

Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin wanted an IPO accessible to all investors, and said so in their first regulatory filing. Facebook may say something similar when it files to declare its intention to sell stock publicly.

Facebook is expected to raise as much as $10 billion, which will value the company at $75 billion to $100 billion, making it one of the largest IPOs. A stock usually starts trading three to four months after the filing.

The highly anticipated filing will reveal how much Facebook intends to raise from the stock market, what it plans to do with the money and details on its own financial performance and future growth prospects.

Along with Wall Street investment banks, Google used a Dutch auction, named for a means of selling flowers in Holland, to sell its shares. It took private bids and allowed investors to say how many shares they wanted and what they were willing to pay.

The process wasn't smooth, though, and Google had to slash its expected offer price at the last minute. If you bought at the IPO, for roughly $85 a share, you still did well: Google closed Tuesday at $580.

More recently, when it filed for an IPO last June, Groupon, which emails daily deals on products and services to its members, added a letter from its 30-year-old founder, Andrew Mason.

"We are unusual and we like it that way," the letter said. "We want the time people spend with Groupon to be memorable. Life is too short to be a boring company."

It's almost become conventional for tech companies to include an unconventional letter when they make their stock market debut. It's widely expected that Zuckerberg, in the very least measure of showmanship, will write one.

But IPO watchers wonder whether there might be a provision specifically designed to give the little-guy investor, even the casual Facebook user who doesn't invest, a piece of the debut.

"There is a feeling that there will be something unique in store for Facebook users," Aggarwal says.

When most companies go public, they let Wall Street investment banks handle everything, with the sweet ground-floor stock price reserved for big institutional investors.

But that probably won't do for Facebook, created in a Harvard University dorm room eight years ago. Or Zuckerberg, whose antiestablishment credentials include spurning a $15 billion takeover offer from Microsoft.

Few expect Zuckerberg to offer a Dutch auction because of the Google experience. But he is at least as unorthodox as Google's founders. People expect him to be in the driver's seat on Wall Street, rather than hand over the controls to bankers.

Facebook is a vital part of people's Internet lives and the most successful company in the history of social media. Its closest competitor, Google+, has less than a tenth the active membership ? 60 million people.

"While there is no such thing as untouchable, Facebook is getting near there, with even Google imitating it," says Sweet, of IPO Boutique.

In "really hot IPOs," 90 percent of the shares go to institutional investors and 10 percent to everyday investors, Sweet says. It's a perk for the banks' biggest clients, like Fidelity Investments or T. Rowe Price or hedge funds.

The funds pay big commissions to the banks for regularly trading large blocks of stocks or bonds. Those relationships are deep and long-lasting ? and lucrative for the banks. The funds expect to be rewarded.

But Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, the banks expected to guide the Facebook IPO, are in an awkward place: They don't want to tick off 800 million Facebook users ? but they don't want to tick off Fidelity, either.

Most IPOs are underpriced, and the stock usually shoots up the first day. Lucky large investors get the basement price and usually a big payday if they sell on the first day. Smaller investors buy on the open market, after the price has spiked, and pay more.

And most early investors do sell. One university research paper found that about 70 percent of the new stock changes hands in the first two days. Groupon introduced 35 million shares, but on the first day its shares were traded almost 50 million times.

Ann Sherman, associate professor and IPO expert at DePaul University, raised the possibility that Facebook could set aside a portion of its shares for the small investor and use a lottery system if there is a lot of demand.

She says the U.S. is the only country without IPO rules that put traditional investors on an equal footing.

"Given that this is such a huge and popular IPO, I've been hoping that Facebook would use this opportunity to try a new method to bring in retail investors ? a public offer where shares are set aside for only individual investors," Sherman says.

But Zuckerberg will also probably be careful how he plays his cards. He doesn't want to anger Facebook users, but his primary goal is to raise money.

The recent experience of Groupon's faltering IPO holds tough lessons for young entrepreneurs. After analysts started questioning its accounting, Groupon had to amend its regulatory filing several times.

Trying to salvage the IPO, founder Mason shed his trademark jeans and T-shirt and donned a suit. He dropped the irreverent talk and spoke about the company's growth prospects at the IPO "roadshow" to impress investors.

Other companies have encountered problems when they went public and tried to reward customers. Upstart Internet phone company Vonage wanted to give customers a chance to buy up to 15 percent of its 31 million shares at its IPO at $17 apiece.

But when the shares fell 13 percent on the first day of trading, many of its small investors that had put in orders to buy didn't want to pay the offer price. It gained the dubious title of one of the worst IPOs that year, something Facebook wants to avoid.

It's also more expensive to sell shares to many people. When thousands of small investors want to buy in, it becomes a logistical nightmare to make sure each investor gets a prospectus with all the important information.

Banks like large investors because it costs about the same to process an order of 50 shares as 50,000. But William Hambrecht, founder and CEO of WR Hambrecht & Co., a firm that runs IPO auctions, says companies that value their customers benefit in the long run.

He gives the example of Boston Beer, maker of Samuel Adams, which went public in 1995. Its founder, James Koch, wanted to reward the people who made his company successful: the buyers of Sam Adams.

Koch set aside a quarter of his shares for the small investor. The deal was a big success and attracted more interest from his beer drinkers than there were shares available. Some people left out were dissatisfied.

Hambrecht says about two-thirds of the investors who bought those shares still owned the stock two years after the IPO. Even today, about a third still own it. Hambrecht says that's because these investors appreciate the company's product.

"Our argument has always been that true buyers of your stock ought to be your own customer base," says Hambrecht. "As the great investor Peter Lynch said: Invest in what you know."
